View Full Version : Cardio ??
I've heard that it takes about 15-30 min of cardio before your body really starts buring fat. Is this true. If so, how long should you do cardio to get good results.

From what I've heard it doesn't take that long, something like 5-10 minutes before all the glycogen in your liver is used up. I've also know that to burn fat it has to be aerobic exercise, after that you are just building up acid. If you aren't a big cardio buff, beginners I hear should only do cardio 30-40 minutes 3 times a week, intermediate 35-45 5 times per week, and expert 50-60 6-7 times per week. I'm probably wrong though and there are better experts that will answer your question.
I'd like to know if I'm wrong so I'll be checking back on this thread:D

01WhiteCobra can definitely handle this topic a little better than I, but I have always read that 20 minutes is the minimum amount of time required to effectively get into the fat-burning zone. Obviously, doing more would prolong your fat-burning effects, so I would recommend atleast 30 minutes of moderate intensity cardio and preferably an hour if fat-loss is your primary fitness goal (meaning lean-mass isn't of importance dring the current phase).

From what I learned you need to be in your target heart rate zone for at least 15-20 minutes. If you need to know how to find your target heart rate let me know.

I've learned that cardio is done at 70-85% max heart rate. Also been told that to calculate your max heart rate you just take 220 minus your age (females are a little different) and that should be it.
Thus for me 220-18= 202 max
So....cardio range is ~140-170

Sorry about the delay, busy day at work. Anyway, the above post was correct. Take 220-your age. That is your MHR. Multiply the # you get by 60% to get your minimum training level. Multiply that same # by 80% to get your maximum training level. The two numbers you get are what you want to shoot for. It just depends on what percentage you want to work out at. During work out you can take your pulse to make sure you are where you want to be. :D Have a nice work out!! Oh yeah, it is not different for girls.
