A friend of mine drives an M3 and needs some audio expertise.

1997 m3 (e36) w/ "hardon kardon" upgraded sound system, which means there are 10 "upgraded" speakers. I inspected the rear deck speakers and noticed they've been replaced with some MB Quarts. the sound system on bimmers, and the '96-98 in particular are widely regarding as sucking. I just want something with good sound for highway driving with the sunroof open w/o distortion.

BTW they are MB 160s Old possibly?

Chambers: Have you looked at the other speakers to see if they've been upgraded as well?

Nope, i need to check them out tonight. i'm guessing they're stock b/c they're a pain to replace due to disassembling the door panels + the balance is all messed up, all rear with the MB's. You have to jack up the fade to almost all front to get any kind of balance. And the MB's distort at only moderately high volume, which makes me think it's a head unit and/or amp issue.

I'm trying to see if I can get satisfactory sound w/o replacing the head unit b/c I like the stock look, just not the stock sound, & i don't want to have to replace the cd changer.

So I think he's looking for an amp and some speakers that he can have installed. He mentioned that he was looking at an A/D/S P650 (http://www.adst.com/pages/p650.html).

I don't know much about Audio, or installation, so thought I'd post up here.

Anyone?

Many options available. Power is your friend so a 4 channel amp and new front and rear speakers will help. The factory speakers are usually from Nokia and they aren't that great. Quart and JL make 3way sets for the front and usually there is a coax in the rear which JL and Quart (and many other brands) also make.
You can keep the factory deck and changer but the overall sound quality will always be less than a good quality (not junk)aftermarket deck.

you can look here. Look under installs at some of the work they have done. I have seen some m3's they have done. they do really bad ass work. If your not looking for any one to do the work. Just call them and they will help you out with what you will need to do it your self. and let you know what is out on the market that is good. aske for Jim
