: Getting paint off chrome?
Chili 10-15-2009, 02:50 PM Would it be possible without damaging the chrome and how difficult would it be? These are chrome bumpers that were painted over. The end result would not have to be perfect.
Hell, would they have scuffed the chrome to paint over it?
Thanks!

If the paint is chipping off, they probably didn't sand them, or sanded them poorly. Chances are, they did, and theres no way your going to get that chrome back without just rechroming it.

wading polish always worked for me. Eagle one I think is the brand. It will take over spray right off chrome bumpers. well it depends on what you mean by paint. Just a little bit or the whole bumpers were painted.
mstng86 10-15-2009, 02:55 PM I think he is talking about the whole bumper.
Chili 10-15-2009, 03:00 PM Yes, the bumpers were intentionally painted over, not just overspray.. So what kind of prep would be needed and what does it cost to rechrome? Probably better off trying to find replacements I would assume.
mstng86 10-15-2009, 03:03 PM I am not an expert on chrome or pricing, but the chrome underneath that paint is not going to look good. From what I understand its cheaper to just buy new bumpers. But, the bumpers might be hard to find.
95snake 10-15-2009, 03:08 PM Chili, what kind of vehicle is it? My 02 F150 had a ding in the bumper when I bought it. I searched and searched for a black painted bumper to match the back bumper. I ended up having to buy a chrome one and painting it.
Chili 10-15-2009, 03:59 PM This is for the '74 Fury mentioned in the back porch. The bumpers and grill are painted black (the color of the car). If I were to decide to do this I would want to do it as cheap as possible.. Looks like finding replacements from a junkyard would be the way to go if they could be found.
Chili 10-15-2009, 04:00 PM Hell, the whole idea of the car is to look like a POS, may just rattlecan them chrome to tide me over. :p
mstng86 10-15-2009, 04:00 PM Chrome paint FTW!!! Just sand it and spray paint some chrome.

mstng86 10-15-2009, 04:11 PM damn, my fingers don't type fast enough.
46Tbird 10-15-2009, 04:58 PM Just get some 0000 steel wool - very important, I said 0000, not 000 or 00 or 0 - and sand all the paint off. You might want to polish the chrome afterwards with a metal polish, but more than likely it will look fine when you're done. Steel wool scratches chrome, but the 0000 is super-fine and you'd be hard pressed to see them. Some people obsess over their chrome, but you're talking about a $400 turd here, just have fun with it. :D

I have 0000 steel wool already and used it to clean up the chrome on my bike.. Works great!
I just found out that the bumpers are powdercoated so I will have to revisit this if and when I get the car. Going to take a look at it Saturday.
Chili 10-15-2009, 06:27 PM This is what I would be going for..
