Can anybody recommend a good CHL class around N/E Dallas? It is a little short notice, but I would like to take the class at the end of the month. I am not too concerned with the cheapest; I would rather have a quality class.

I did a search and somebody recommended http://www.chltx.com/ but that is in Arlington. I don't have a problem driving there, but if an equality good class is held near Garland I would rather go there.

I went to On-Target. It's between Benbrook and Cresson on 377. The class was awesome. I learned way more than my dad did in his that he took somewhere in Arlington. I know it's far for you but it definitely would be worth your drive one Saturday.

Guy I work with recommended the Bullet Trap on Ave K in Plano.

They have gun rentals, too. At some point, I'm going to run up there and check it out.

I thought the class was good...some people dont like him. The shooting range is right near his house. You do the class at his house. You basically watch a powerpoint presentation that he has made which takes most of the time. He spends that time doing everyones fingerprint cards.

Anyways, I will probaby go back to him in 4 more years when I need a renewal.

A few others on the board and I went to this one:

http://chltx.com/

He's a very informative instructor, former USMC, and an overall good guy.

I took mine at Red River Firearms, in Sherman, which is an hour north of Dallas, and a little bit east....of highway 75. Had been going to their range quite often, so it was a natural choice to me to take the class their as well. Great guys, great range.

Just thought I'd throw it in there for consideration.

Thanks for all the comments. I will probably take the class at CHLTX.com; it is right down the road from my other house in Arlington.

Use the bullet trap link. 130 for first timer. I'm going on the 29th class.

So there is a fee due to instructor and also fee due to state? I'd like to get mine done.

Also need to figure out which firearm to purchase. Hmm

Ya, it's dirt cheap for LEOs, 75 for veterans and 140 or so for normal citizens. Each time it expires, new class and renewal.

I personally think it is over priced, at least the state side.

So 140 for everything? Including instructor fee and state paperwork? Sorry just unsure

Na, 140ish for the paperwork...or somewhere in that ballpark. The training, I've seen from 99 on up.

The problem is that I am only going to be home from Iraq for a couple of weeks, then i fly back. I checked their website and they do not list any classes withing my available time frame. I sent them an email just to be sure.

*I* would just wait. The damned class is like 12 hours long, which IMHO is a waste of time for you on your leave. I'd just wait.

The other option is to spend 200-300 for a private lesson with a cop or someone who does it.

The cool thing is that if he takes it while here his CHL will be waiting for him when he gets back. If he waits then he will have to wait another 3-4 months for the actual license when he gets back. Good point on whether or not you want to spend your time doing that though.

With the wait time the way it is, I'd do it now and get it over with.

When I was gone for 6-8 months, my poon-tang meter was low and I was only worried about raising it. But it would be cool to make double use of that time anyway. :)

Did you ask about CHL at the Garland Public Range? Dunno what it costs but I am pretty sure they have a class there and its like 5 minutes from Sachse. I have been going do there to learn to shoot my pistol and like the range pretty well.
