Fort Worth joining Dallas in gun buyback after a long hiatus
By MIKE LEE

FORT WORTH — More than a decade after dropping a similar program, Fort Worth officials are joining Dallas in holding a gun buyback program on Aug. 15.

People who turn in a working gun will receive a $50 gift card, no questions asked. Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway, who has organized other buybacks in Dallas, challenged Fort Worth to have one of its own, and Fort Worth City Councilman Frank Moss stepped up.

"I think it’s important we both work together," Moss said.

Fort Worth’s buyback will be in the afternoon, while Dallas’ will be in the morning.

Some details, such as the exact location, are still being worked out, Moss said. But the event will be near Miller Avenue and Berry Street, to attract residents from southeast Fort Worth. Moss said he and other organizers are trying to raise enough money to buy 300 guns.

"One thing we have been watching in our crime reports, District 5 has experienced more gun crime and gun violence," Moss said of his district, which includes southeast Fort Worth.

In 1993, Fort Worth launched "Stop the Violence/Stop the Tears," becoming the first city in Texas to offer cash as a way to get guns off the streets. Similar programs ultimately collected thousands of guns in Buffalo, N.Y., St. Louis and Minneapolis.

Fort Worth canceled its buyback program in 1994 after collecting only 115 weapons the year before. Then-City Manager Bob Terrell said the program simply "did not work."

Critics said the earlier program may have suffered because it paid a small amount and police insisted that people turning in guns provide identification.

Caraway said in a news release that a Dallas buyback in February netted 150 guns, and that the Aug. 15 event there will be at Dallas City Hall. He suggested that he may challenge cities beyond Fort Worth, saying, "We need to work with other cities and be proactive, to increase safety in our communities."

I'll get some $75 gift cards and wait in the parking lot. I'll bet the cops would run you off though. What sucks is some good guns are going to be destoyed.

Stimulas plan!

City pays low life 50 dollars for gun. Low life pays 50 dollar to meth dealer. Meth dealer combines money from low lives and purchases better gun.

There is no way around it... It will probably be a gift card, So I can walk around with $60 Dollars in an envelope and say, $50 dollars gift card or $60 dollars cash? What makes more sense... If the criminals had any...

Me no like.

1. Encourages people to steal guns.
2. Not a fan of amnesty.
3. How are they going to determine if it is a "working" gun? Are they going to test fire it?
4. Great. Miller/E Berry is right in my area.
5. Is holding it in this area admitting to something? It's a predominately minority area, so are city officials saying that crime is the fault of minorities?

All this does is help the media try to convince the public that we the people don't need guns. They said on the new last night that we don't need ak's you cant hunt with them. They are getting real close to the line they don't want to cross.

This pisses me off on many levels, one I am an avid collector of the arts. I pay my taxes don't harm anyone in anyway. I hope it doesn't makeit to the day when we the people have to take this country back.

I'm wondering if I cut Matt in for a third of the profit he'd protect me from getting kicked out of the area while offering $60 and a 40 oz each "on acceptable models"?

I'm sure the cops already have a plan to run off the poachers with deeper pockets than the city.

This socialism in it's simplest form and it's right here in Texas..... sad. I expect this kind of garbage from California, but here? Wow.....

Think about this for just a second.

Do you really want to go into the heart of Stop Six with cash asking to buy guns off of people that you already know live in a bad neighborhood? You could go 3 streets to the east of that intersection and buy dope off of Hatcher.

As soon as someone found out that you were just some guy with cash buying guns, someone else would jack your ass.

I was just trying to joke around bro. I doubt seriously there will be any nice guns (unless they're hot which I wouldn't want anyways) coming out of there. Just thought the visual of guys buying guns next to the popo buying guns only with popo protection was humorous. And representative of capitalism at work...

We all know the AKs and real "assault" weapons aren't gonna be showing up.

The city will end up paying good money for worthless shit guns. There are a lot of damn guns in that part of town, it is not uncommon to just hear a few random gunshots a night if you live there.

It is a political stunt, nothing more, nothing less.

But it makes the LIBs feel good!

Try riding out on the midnight shift on the 4th of July or New Year's. It sounds like Baghdad.

I worked a special detail targeting this very trend last year. There are so many gunshots it's freaking amazing. It's also impossible to stop, because the vast majority take the gun out the back door, pop off a few rounds, then step back inside.

No witnesses, and by the time you roll down the alley to see where it came from, all you find is a bunch of vacant back yards.

Does "working gun" include airsoft? I could make a profit on this BS.

I'm thinking this proposition would be fine if you had a permit. I don't think the boys at city hall would grant one though.

Anyone that owns a firearm and not a "gat" paid damn good money for it probably, and wouldn't dare sell it to be melted down for 50 bucks. This is just grabbing all the stolen guns off the low lifes and putting crack money in their hands.

Stolen guns should be returned to the rigthful owner, not destroyed.

Evidently there were 142 guns bought from the public on Saturday.

Almost all of them were old junkers, with what was described to me. There were more than a few break open revolvers.

But, there were a few "nice" guns. Some still in the box, and one Auto-Ordinance Thompson replica (semi-auto). Of the 142 guns, probably only a handfull were from the area, and most were from out of the FTW city limits.

I was told that some people went to Dallas, but they were closed and told them to come to FTW (the Dallas one was in the morning, the FTW was in the early afternoon).

So, again, this was an epic fail in getting guns off the street that needed to be off the street. There were no gang bangers turning in thier guns.

But, from what I was told, there were a few politicians out there that used the buy back as a photo op and for good press.

Oh, and the gun buy back was not financed by the taxpayers. The $50 AMEX gift cars were donated. When they ran out of those, the Fiesta grocery store donated $50 gift cards, and one of the people who got the Fiesta card asked "what's this?". When they were told that it was a Fiesta card, they had never heard of Fiesta and said they wouldn't be coming back to this neighborhood to spend it.

the TV stations were talking about tec-9 that was turned in at the Dallas location. Apparently the tec-9 is an assault rifle according to one channel and on another it is a machine gun. The guy who turned it in found it under a bridge while he was fishing

Who lost there guns in a fishing trip? lol
