Not sure why this is in the smack section, but in answer to your question (if I understand it correctly):

Dealers will give you less on a trade-in than you will get if you sell the vehicle outright to an individual. This is partly due to the fact that dealers have known costs that they will have to pay before they list the vehicle for sale (i.e. cleaning, inspections, repairs, listing costs, etc etc). If they gave you the same amount that you would charge an individual then they would not make anything on the sale of the car that you traded in. I am sure some delaers on here can provide more light on the subject.

It sounds like you took your vehicle to a dealership and they offended you with a low trade-in offer. Have you never experienced dealings w/ dealerships?

no,not talking about dealerships.Im talking about private sellers,yea ive been around for awhile,anyway i know used car dealers ask if you have a trade in or is it cash sale,cause all they are going to do is raise the price of the car you are trying to buy up and not give u much if anything for what your trading so when they sell your trade in its usually good profit for them.

Today most consumers are educated and up to date with what vehicles are going for in there area. due to so many online resourcesw for information and sites like this and craigslist the can usually find a better deal. Most of the time to sell something quick you have to offer a incrdible deal in which you lose money and people still try to low ball you.

black book is for new vehicles with like invoices, I'm pretty sure. At least, in my field (auto finance) that is there sole use. When I sell my recovered units at auction, they are always appraised of NADA. NADA is generally the accepted appraisal method for all vehicles outside of California - they tend to use Kelley. If you saw what dealers pay at auction, you'd rethink ever taking a vehicle to them, and I can't blame them for lowballing the shit out of customers on trade, for what they pay at auction it's insanity. I just recovered a 2002 CTS from a customer and the high bid was 5k at auction, had 55k miles on it, loaded - took my breath away.
