What is the safest way to discharge a car stereo capacitor?

With a screwdriver. If you don't feel so adventurous, get a 10k resistor and connect it between the two leads.

Screwdriver is fine but it will leave a mark on the screw driver. Lightbulb, resistor, tongue, etc.

The cap will discharge as V=Vinitial*(1-1e^(t/RC)) fwiw. That will give you an idea of how long you need to keep the resistor connected.

Just use an 1187 or something
