I'm thinking of cutting back the A/C during the days when nobody is there. How much of a split ( if any ) should I do on my thermostat settings? I am currently doing 78*F upstairs and down. Was thinking 78*F down and 80*F up. Anybody have any experience / results doing this?

Thanks,
Jeff

I would do 80 down and 78 up stairs and just leave them on auto don't turn them off when u are not at home because when u do that the AC works ten times harder to cool the house then big electric bills

They way it works for my house is I have 1 unit for both upstairs and downstairs (1706 sqft home with about 20 ft high ceilings)

When its occupied we have it at 78 - 79 and when we leave in the morning I just manually knock it up to 83.

When I get home I just walk over and knock it back down and it takes about 45 min to cool the house (still feels good @ 83 compared to 105 outside)

My bills are better this month than last years at this time. By about $50 (this year was 138 - last what 180 something)

I need to friggin program the stupid thermostat though...but I am too lazy.

Due to my work schedule and the ex-wifes schedule i had the a/c kick off at 11am from 78* to 85* until 8pm at night. When i was home and if it was real out i would turn the a/c back on. I did keep the fans in the bedroom and living room on at all times on LOW.

My exwife used to work 12-9 so it worked out for us since i was always in the garage and she was gone during the day. the house was warm at the hottest part of the day but not unbearable and the a/c didn't have to work so hard to cool the house since the sun was on its way down.
the fans help a bunch and i also found that leaving the attic ladder down when i was working in the garage help ventilate the attic.

1600sqft house.. highest summer bill was 180ish... (all eletric house) Now winter time.. that heat pump kicked my ass 230.00-250.00 bills in the winter.

Oh it helps to be used to the tropics and have a signifigant other that enjoys it hot. Winter bills sucked since she was ALWAYS freezing her ass off lol

we keep it at ~80 during the day and she likes ~75 at night.

i'm cool with 78-79 but have to play to her tastes.. out bill was like 153 last month for a little over 700sq ft apartment. i swear something's wrong with our unit but they came and checked it last week and said all is fine.:(

2-Story 2700sq Ft House.

Downstairs at 77-78 during the day, then 74 at night.
Upstairs stays off unless we are going to be up there for awhile.

actually, the largest heat gain on your house occurs between 3-7 in the afternoon depending on how well your house is built, as in, when the sun is going down, that is when you home sees the largest HVAC load.

I typically leave my apartment at 85* during the day while I'm not there. I'll drop it to about 75 when I get home and it typically takes 30-45 min to cool off. You really don't notice it being that hot, especially coming from 100*+ temps outside.

I have a 2 story townhome with 2 units and I turn both completely off during the day and crank them down to 70 at night. My electric bill last month was around $70.
