View Full Version : Anyone insulated their garage door?

My neighbor gave me a bunch of new sheets of that pink foam insulation and I was thinking of using it in each one of my garage door panels. I figure its bound to make a difference right? My door faces east so it gets all the morning - midday sun.

My question is how to attach it? Should I just use some Liquid Nails or something else?

Can anyone comment on the before/after if you've done this? Did it make a difference?

We did it to the door on my buddy's mancave (single car separated garage) and it helped enough to allow the little portable AC unit in there keep it a couple degrees cooler when it's hot out.

Wont this put alot of stress on the garage door opener?

We used some of that foil backed foam sheets to do the main shop door at my business... worked great and made a big difference.

That door faced dead East and in the mornings 'til about noon, it was so damn hot, you couldn't hardly touch it.

We used the foil backed foam to the door in the garage bay at work. It dropped the temp in the garage by about 8 degrees. I would defiantly recommend doing it.

Here is some R8 stuff from Owens Corning. Homedepot sells this kit for a 9' wide door for $69.
http://homedepot.owenscorning.com/projects/garage.aspx#step1

It does not look as good as the exposded foil side foam but has a better R value.

Not sure if I would still use the foil foam to help brighten up the garage or this stuff with a better R value.

Kevin, I would like to see how yours turned out and to see how your floors are holding up. I am about to close on a house with a 900sqft garage and a lot of these topics center around my future projects. Door insulation, floor coating, garage a/c et.

Now I will admit I am leaning more to paying the $3600 for the floors though....the idea of warranty, free touch ups no matter the cause etc and the fact that I can blame someone else if it comes out crappy two years from now, give me a better peace of mind.

this stuff has an R8 rating. I thought the foil backed foam had an R12 rating? can anyone confirm?

Nope. They might have a thicker board with R12 rating, but HD certainly didn't have it.

1" board has a rating of R-5. 1/2" board has a rating of R-3.2. I doubled mine, using the 1" board first, foil side out. Then went with the 1/2", foil side in. Held it all in with foil tape. I'll take some pictures and post tonight.

Was 29 degrees cooler in the garage yesterday, and it wasn't even all that hot yesterday. Oh, and my garage door faces west.

10-15 degree's of that had to do with it not being 108-110 outside yesterday I bet.

completely agree with you, but 15-20 degree difference is still very impressive. don't you think?

Oh yeah, I agree completely. I spend a lot of time in the garage, and it was getting to be pretty ridiculous. I'd be completely soaked within about 10 minutes. 130+ on a 107 degree day was pretty average. Yesterday, it was still a bit warm, but I was out there for an hour before I started sweating profusely. If I had a fan going yesterday, I could have stayed all day and barely broke a sweat. Unfortunately, all my fans are loaned out at the moment.

At our old house I used the foil backed stuff that was like bubble wrap. The door faced west, so by afternoon it was scorthing hot. made a HUGE difference. I used some great Stuff to glue it in place. That shit is like glue!

Plus it provides r value and acts as insulation itself. I use it for all gaps, even for my attic insualtion (bats/foam, not the blow-in of course)

So people are using sheets or bubble wrap?

Would a south facing garage door see much benefit of this? One wall of my garage shares with my living room and I notice if I leave the garage door open during the hot part of the day the living room will get hotter. If I leave it closed it's not as bad. I'm wondering if I insulate the garage door if it will help keep the living room even cooler.

I used sheet, but basically what is being said is that either will help.

For the cost, it's one of those modifications that can't hurt to throw on regardless of which way your garage faces.

Take care

South facing will not really gain as much, but depending on the angle of the sun and if it hits the doors directly, it will help some. Put a floor fan in there and leave the doors open about 1 or 2 inches.

I took a little more time and installed it in a way that gave about 1-inch air pocket between the inside of the metal on the garage door to the actual foam/radiant barrier. Should help raise the R value some vs. gluing it directly to the metal door skin. Hope it helps out with the heat........took 4 sheets at about $12 a sheet from Lowes and a roll of aluminum tape.

what is your estimate on how much all that weighs?

Well, a sheet weighs about 2-3 pounds and a roll of the aluminum tape weighs about 2 pounds or less.......I would guess about 10-14 pounds total.

The same door that you can buy already insullated weighs more than that and they use the same garage door motor according to the garage door company that installed mine.
