View Full Version : Finally got the new fence - WOW!

I've hated this fence ever since I moved in and was finally able to do something about it. If you want a NICE quality cedar wood fence that every piece of wood is hand picked and tongue en-grooved, then this is the fence for you. Pricing wasn't tooooo bad either, still a little pricey, but I had a lot to cover.

Call Dan Billings - Shamrock Fence Co - 214-316-3827 (I'm not in any way affiliated with him, just giving the info cause someone is bound to ask) Tell him Jeff Swope sent you.

Super nice guy and very thorough with the work!

This was after. There is still a header that is going to be placed above the gate later this week, but it had to be custom made.

This corner is probably about 10' tall. I wanted it to be completely level from the house out.
this is the other side gate with the new header above it. Looks really good!

We had a bit of an ordeal with the first set of gates and the normal header that goes across. This was the first set of gates they made.
http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k67/jeffrswope/house/fence/DSC06474.jpg

These were the 2nd set of gates - they're AWESOME - you can't even tell theres a gate there from a glance and all the cross boards line up with the rest of the fence. Also the boards below are contoured to the shape of the ground which slopes down hill about a foot from the house to the sidewalk!

I was thinking the same thing as I was scrolling down the pics. lol

My HOA will not allow privacy fences so a wrought iron is going in as soon as I close this/next week. 440' with three gates is going to be a butt load of coin.

I guess for security I will have to see what the by laws say about concertina wire.

I am digging the height on this one, looks good.

No doubt, the fence guy said he's had about 20 people call so far on the fence. Amazing. I'm on the corner of a pretty busy street though.

I am going to use a member here bottlefedstang I believe. The house sites is on the corner and is an acre lot. Luckily the neighbor's fence covers a good 120' so we can just add to his my 440'. I am expecting a cost north of $8,000 but should last forever and look great.

7100 isnt out of line for something that pretty. How is it going to weather? I know nothing of fences.

It looks good and you did not pay too much that is the big part of it all. The fact that you are happy is the most important though. Being DFWStangs someone will be along shortly to try and piss in your Cornflakes, rest assured.

For sure! I do like it an its a 10000% improvement over the old fence that I had. I'm happy with it. I'll post up pics when they get the headers over the gates. Then it will be 100% finished.

I do bi-yearly maintenance on mine, which is basically spraying on clear sealer - checking for loose stuff...etc. I would not rely on it to stay in top notch condition without refreshing the sealer every so often.

Do you have a HOA? I know mine would require prior approval..etc...etc.

Think there is more lumber in your fence then in your house there. :D

It was made higher so that, looking from the front of the house, it was level all the way across. The old fence went down hill and I never liked it.

Yeah... thank God for a brick house. The funny thing is, this house has 3 windows total in it.

No HOA - If there was one though, i'd probably be the president :D ALL my neighbors love the fence, but I bet a HOA would need approval. I dont think i'd ever live anywhere there was an HOA.

Thanks for all the compliments!

Is the header over the gate going to be permanent? If so, is the boat going to fit under? I'm sure you have already thought about that but juuusst in case.

Edit:: What I mean by permanent is fixed or actually a part of the gates.

Good catch. I talked to him earlier today, and that was one reason why it's not there yet. They're actually thinking about doing 2 - 8 foot gates instead of a header, but I think SOME kind of header is needed. I think a simple 2x6 cedar piece at the top would be perfect. Right now, the boat leaves about 6-8 inches of header space from what I've been eye balling. He'll be out tomorrow morning for me to discuss it further with him.

How about just adding some framed lattice work to the top of the gates? Lattice so it doesn't add much weight. It can be built seperately and then just nailed / screwed into place. IDK, just a thought. I wouldn't do the header only because you may want to park something taller there later. RV, Trailer, or even just a boat with a rack on it (you know, those wakeboard / peaker tower things).

Keep in mind also, that if you do raise the height of the gate that left side door will not be able to swing as wide as it does now without hitting your roof.

Very good points. Its already a tight fit. Those are 2 - 5' gates - so its only 10' wide, i brushed against it putting the boat in there the first time - damn near shit a brick. Wasn't worried about it hurting my new boat - i was worried about the fence! haha

I see what you mean about the gates not opening up all the way if they were 8 foot. Hrm... i'll talk it over with him in the morning. I think the header they make is something of lattice work or something. He was talking about making a removable header and I was like - how the hell am i gonna reach it!? hahaha

Yeah, I had my trailer stolen WITH a trailer lock. I was out there last weekend and I saw where the trailer that sat next to where mine was parked is not there anymore either, and it had been there for years. Stolen? Dunno.

We're doing alright. I'm having to travel a lot for work right now, but it's good to have a job.

Looks good man! I've never seen a fence that tall. :D The cedar will be a big maintenance deal. Like ceyko said, be sure to treat it twice a year, because if you let it go too long, it will ruin.

I've got an 8' privacy fence - and get this, it's made of FIBERGLASS. Sounds like shit right? No one knows that it is, it looks just like wood until you tap it. I like it because there is no maintenance and it will withstand hurricane winds.

Really like the look of that fence...

After looking at the construction pictures, there is a LOT of work in that fence. It was worth it for as much as you needed it. Now you just need to drop a little more coin and have a slab poured for that boat. I know someone if you are interested.

I've had over 20-25 neighbors stop and talk to me about the fence so far, it truely is something to see in person. If anyone is serious about a fence - this is THE fence to have built.

The fence is now 100% complete! The gates are all finished now and this was their final product. The 2x4 across the top really help tie things together and I can still get my boat in and out with out coming close - about 8-10" of clearance there.
