Anybody seen the previews for this yet? Something to do with aliens that live on Earth and are starting to look suspicious or something. Reminds me a bit of Starship Troopers.

It looks cool as hell.

With Peter Jackson producing, it should be A LOT better than Starship Troopers.

Only if he makes it like Bad Taste with nothing but blood and guts overload.

I think the plot is more like Aliens living here on Earth in their own "ghettos" and how the humans dont respect them etc.

The producer said something along the lines of the movie being a metaphor for the way people treat immigrants.

I'm sure you can Googler what its about, but its more fun to speculate here.

I understood the alien's hoopty broke down so they ended up staying till they could get the dough to get it fixed and on their way. They just want to go home.

The plot was nothing what I thought it would be. Honestly i think it was better that I didn't know what it was going to be about. Although I had a few problems with some details of the movie, specifically the ending, it was overall a good movie.

Just got back from seeing it. To be honest, I woke up at 5:30 this morning and was tired as hell going into the movie and kept dozing off the first hour or so, which was pretty boring from what I saw, then shit started going down the second half and it was pretty badass. I wish there would've been more to the ending, but not every movie has to have a traditional ending I guess.

It was different and unique for sure. Not what I was expecting. But a pretty well done flick.

Just got back from watching it, FUCKING EPIC.
I loved it, but on the way out. My sister in law sparked up an interesting argument, "Why are Aliens/ET's always shown to be way more advanced and their space ships extremely bigger than ours." who says they're more advanced than us? who says they've mastered space travel?

Anyhoo, fucking epic. Loved it.

Here's the short film made several years back that District 9 grew out of...

i think about the general vastness of space itself and the fact that they made it here instead of us being on their planet. we are somewhat familiar with the technology that would require to travel such vast distances so just the notion of them being on our turf would indicate them being more advanced. thats my thinking anyway...

The whole advanced/retarded (not meant in that way) development of extra terrestrial life is one that always sparks my imagination after I see movies or read books like this. The books I am reading now by Iain M. Banks (his "Culture Novels") are pretty interesting when it comes to this point.

Basically there are far more advanced societies out there that see societies like ours, or others that may be around or below our level in technological advancement, and they observe and study them. Although it's not really discussed at any length, it seems as though through my understanding of his stories there are two different scenarios that come into play.

If they feel that the society is too fragile for advanced society intervention they let them alone until they think they may be ready to learn there are more than just them out there. Sometimes they will "abduct" some members of the less advanced society, take them away, and let them breed into their culture and bring them back when they think they are ready, and then plant them in key positions of power so that they can secretly drop hints about new technologies that the "natives" wouldn't normally have yet come to realize. Kind of like an accelerated learning course (this would seem to be the most often adopted method in his books). And since the individuals that were secretly taken and replaced by the more advanced society look like them, they are more readily accepted than an alien race would be, thus the old species sort of develops on its own and can meet ET life as if they ahd discovered them out of sheer luck or by way of their own devices.

If the more advanced species feels that the less advanced species is open-minded enough, they take themselves in and introduce themselves to the less advanced species and slowly try to help them learn and develop their technologies by way of a sort of mentor theory (less frequent scenario).

All pretty interesting stuff, to me anyway.

Pretty easy answer. Just because there are some that have mastered space travel it doesn't mean that every extra-terrestrial society has. Why are the ships so big? Space is big. Travel takes a long time. You'd probably need a lot of room for food storage and it's inhabitants. A small crew would'nt last very long in deep space.

Because they were able to find us, we weren't able to find them. DUH! :p

This was my answer to her, and it shows in this movie with the sheer count of aliens that were in the refugee camp.

Also, it's interesting that the vast majority of the aliens seemed to be of a drone/labor class (It's possible that the 2 that were working to get the ship running were of a slightly higher order, but it's doubtful they were of a command class). One of the main problems with a market driven civilization is that it assumes labor and end consumers will function as a sort of rotating disposable class to be farmed by those controlling the capital. A simplified/dumbed down labor class would remove the need for a disposable segment of a population.

Spoiler******************************???

Perhaps the alien civilization ran out of food or whatever they needed to survive, so they stopped by Earth. Not being a hostile civilization, they didn't want to piss us off by just taking over Earth and using our resources. Instead, we came to them, took them out of their ship, put them in a concentration camp, and perhaps, not understanding the language first, we of course couldn't tell that all they needed was supplies and then to be on their way. Eventually, after learning of how advanced their weaponry and other technology is we said "Fuck you, you're not going home." Because even though we understood their language, mankind is full of greedy assholes. So the man gets squirted with that black shit...I'm guessing fuel for the little scout ship that fell from the mother ship, and somehow it bonded with his DNA to start turning him into a prawn. Once the humans found out about it, they wanted to study him, and find a way to use the alien weaponry...probably without becoming a prawn. Well, home-dude escapes (can't remember how, I fell asleep for a little bit) and ends up in the prawn camp. He talks to the prawn with the kid who is looking for the little fuel capsule, the human says he knows where it is, and the prawn agrees to help make him human again if he shows him where the capsule is. They break into the lab, steal the capsule, only to find that scientists have been conducting experiments on prawns. (No surprise) They get back to the camp, the human gets pissed at the prawn b/c it's going to take 3 years for him to come back and turn him back into a human, so the human tries to operate the ship himself, gets shot down, and now him and the prawn are both being attacked by the white and black people.

I think you can get the rest from there. Man inside machine making people explode. Etc...

Very good movie. The way they made him use those weapons with his alien hand was fucked up. When they brought in the prawn and they forced him to blast him was messed up. Sad to say that this would actually happen if an event like this occured. The government will do anything for the advancement of millitary weapons, by any means necessary. This movie really makes you think.

I hated the movie. It was ridiculous. All the aliens behave like half retarded, pieces of trash. Except for of course one of them and it's offspring. The main character is constantly ending his sentences with "...man". It didn't even have any action to redeem itself. All the action you see, you've already seen in the previews and it happens in the last 20 minutes of the movie.

yeah, you are mixing your movies.

Halo ran into problems with the scripting and the budget kept getting bigger and bigger. So he dropped Halo and went to work on District 9 (which he'd been wanting to get produced for a while)

But now that it's over, hopefully they can re-negotiate Halo otherwise it might never come to life.
