View Full Version : So, I played my first round of golf today... tips?

I haven't swung a golf club since junior high, and only play putt putt as far as actual contact is concerned. Technically I played only 12 holes... I did not buy enough and the water hazards gobbled them up. I averaged 6.82 per hole... running that number out the back puts me at 123ish. I wanted to get under 150 and I was well on pace to do so.

Notes:
1. I need to go to a driving range.
2. More balls.
3. Sun screen.
4. Another gallon of water.

I'm left handed: Why does my swing take up so much to the left? I finally compensated for it by purposely lining up right, and accepting the inevitable slice. Did better after that!

I had a couple holes that were elevated green shots... what's the best way to get underneath the ball (swing motion, club choice, speed, etc) without it landing and running out after it hits?

Don the best advice I got when I first started golfing, was to take a lesson or two. Which I did at the pga tour superstore. I took at least 6 lessons and it helped me out a bunch. I never swung a club in my life and now I have been playing for a year and half and I am shooting mid 90's. People can tell you things cause they did for me but it didn't help what so ever. Go take a lesson, I think they are 40 dollars for an hour.

What he said. There are many different things that could be causing the issues you're having with your swing and there's no good way to correct a swing if you're not one on one with someone to see exactly what they're doing. Spend a little bit of money and get someone's full, devoted attention on your swing and it'll improve in a hurry.

Outside of that, just get out there and play. Hit balls and play. There's no other way to get good at golf.

When it comes to elevating the ball your natural instinct is to try and get under it. You actually want to do the opposite and and strike down on the ball rather than scoop it. The only thing that will help you get the right point of contact is practice. Ideally your swing bottoms out about two inches in front of where your ball lies.

If you want to start playing, get with someone for some leasons asap... Going out and trying to figure out a swing is just going to start bad habbits that will be harder to correct down the road. If you get with someone now to begin with the basics, you will be practicing correct form, grip, etc.

As far as getting under the ball, there isn't a need to "help" get the ball up. The loft of the club does all the work.

HEYO!

But really, yeah i would go in for some lessons. Should be fun too as you will see some good progress with only a few lessons.

So far, whats your impression of the game, with only 12 holes in under your belt since jr. high?

07-07-2009, 12:20 PM
try this, just make sure your club head does not get behind or ahead of your hands/arms. that means at the point of contact that club should be like an extension of your penis, straight down and lined up with the rest of your body.

buzntxn
07-07-2009, 12:27 PM
and about the swing thing... you work with what you got. you arent going to hire an instructor and expect a PGA caliber swing from 5-10 lessons. i dont care how you swing, its all about the point of contact with the ball. There are always just a couple minor things that can be done to correct ANY swing.

and you are very lucky to be left handed as you can go out to the range with someone and basically mirror them. (i mean if they know what they are doing :P)

It was an absolute blast. Like bowling, I could dwell on it and pick apart what I was doing wrong... UNLIKE bowling, I'm not good enough to correct myself yet. I'm going to go to a driving range today and see if I can drill the ball semi straight.

Don, the best thing I can tell you is a tip I got years ago about slicing. Do not compensate for the slice, it only makes it worse! Do the opposite and close your stance a bit, dont't open up and aim for a slice, it only makes it worse.

A slice is caused by 2 things, sometimes both at the same time. Open club face at impact, and/or and outside to inside swing plane coming through the ball.

Get a lesson or 2 to start, then just like bowling, practice your ass off. Most beginners have trouble with touch around the greens. Sure up your short game first. Hitting the ball far is cool and all, but golf is ALL about the short game. Trust me...... Chipping and putting will shave tons of strokes off your round if you get it down.

Best advice I can offer is not for your swing but make sure your grip is correct. I started playing several times a week a little over 2 years ago and I had a horrible slice. I talked to friends, had some coaching and still couldn't fix my slice. Went and spent 15 minutes with a pro at one of our clubs and the first thing he said before he even saw my swing was "how's your grip?". Turns out that my grip was just off enough for me to slice almost every time. So before you try to correct a swing, make sure your grip is correct.

Don pretty much like everyone has said, everyones problems with their swing are unique to them. I would start out buy going to a PGA tour store or something and asking one of their pros to take a look at your swing. They will do it for free, and are extremely helpful. Next thing is, if you're serious keep at it. I know you're a fairly dedicated bowler, well you're going to have to do that plus more for golf. It's all about muscle memory.

LOL, Don's no quitter. Golf is the single hardest sport out there, period. Other Sports may take more athletic ability, like hockey and Football, but Golf provides no room for error. It's a mental challenge. Good equipment doesn't make up for faults in your swing and game. You have to have consistent and good technique every swing.

Golf is awesome, it's frustrating at times, but it's amazing when you get over that beginners hill and start learning the game itsself.

There are actually several different causes for your slice. As Motoman mentioned, check your grip. Swing plane from out to in will cause this. Also, try moving the ball a few inches back in your stance. It may be up too far, causing the club face to be closed at point of contact. This creates a spin on the ball, much like ping pong.

It was pretty funny. We were out with a big wig from a national chain. Bossman kept apologizing to the customer. "I'm so sorry you have to play with these fucks on a regular basis. They are terrible. I'm going to send Brent and Brian to a golf camp. As for Zach, you need to go take a lesson and then quit."

You will be surprised at how many strokes you will take off once you get "used" to your swing. I am going to try and hit the range a couple times to try and get used to the knee brace, and that should help get mine stroke count back closer to normal.

The more you do it right, the more you will do it right. It just takes time.

It's nice to have goals in golf, it maintains some direction for the clusterfuck that you're getting in to. Don't forget about your short game and putting; nothing shaves strokes off your score like being able to scramble up and down. You can skull the ball all of the way up to the green and still manage to salvage a par or bogey if you can chip and putt.

playing at D.A.C. tomorrow.

Slowhand, here's a good tip for you. use cheap golf balls. i'd recommend Top Flight XL Straight's. they are under 9 bucks for 15.

Here's a good deal for the learning golf player on todays sellout.woot.com (http://sellout.woot.com)

If you're learning to play and planning on playing alot, I'd suggest a cheap POS driver until you've dialed in your swing because you're going to trash the first driver you use.

Good, always good to have a goal like that. I don't set a goal per say anymore, I work on hitting teh Par 3's at par or better, or work on my driver one round, irons the next one, depends on what course I am playing adn what I am trying to accomplish.

I will shoot under par at Willow this summer, there, that's a goal.

Hey MotoMan, I have been hearin great things about the wide grips for purtters. Havent tried one yet though.

I just switched to a wide grip for my putter just a couple months back and I feel like it's made a huge difference in my short game. I don't have the two thumb grip like I linked but next time to the golf shop I'm going to put that one on my other putter to compare both grips. I currently have this one and love it so far. http://www.golfsmith.com/cm/products/57467/Winn/Excel_Jumbo_AVS_Black_Pistol_Putter_Grip?&lcode=cross_sales&cm_re=cm_cs_-top-_-top&cm_mmc=crosssell-_-cm-_-0-_-1

After reading the reviews about them I had to try one out, and if $10-$20 can improve my game by 5-10 strokes then it's worth it to me.

You don't. That's a very common mistake to think that you need under the ball. I promise this...if you try what I'm about to tell you, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Put the ball just a little forward in your stance an try to nail the ball into the ground. It will create lift. :)

Try playing in the week when the courses are not so busy. Its good to learn by actually playin. Always allow faster players to play through. But spending time on the range is always a good ideal.

i'll play too if it is next week.

if we can pick a central location that doesn't get too crowded & get enough players, it would be cool to do a 3 or 4 team best ball scramble tourny.

100 bux per team - 4 player team - 25 bux a person plus greens fees and cart.

that's the good thing about best ball scrambles. you may get lucky and hit a good shot the team can use when the others shank.

Anyone play in Arlington/GP?

I'd be down. I haven't played in years, so it would be quite comical.

I bet you are great at this kind of thing though. Be my guest. Please. :)

Don, if you are ever on my side of town in the evenings - I can probably arrange for a free lesson or two.

As long as you can handle a 16 year old telling you how to hit a ball! ;)

I could care less who it is honestly. I just need some tips, last time I tried to make major swing changes I couldn't hit a golf ball right for months. So I am making small minor changes here and there and my game has gotten a ton better. I hit the range up there sometimes and always see the same group of kids hitting, I bet I know the kid you're talking about.

I am fairly certain you do, if you've seen me around - you know what he looks like, he looks a LOT like me, just darker. lol.

he is there on the range nearly every day, or on the putting green.
