I bought a ceiling fan for my patio that I need to have wired up. I can hang it and wire it up where it mounts to the patio cover, but I need someone who can wire it to an existing switch or a new switch. Any ideas on what this kind of work costs? I'm about out of money, and wouldn't mind doing it if I didn't think I'd electrocute myself.

I know it is kinda cheesy. On an old house, I had a small patio that had an existing porch light. I unscrewed the bulb and screwed in a socket adapter. I then ran an extension cord over to my fan and wired it in. I used the existing porch light switch as my fan switch.

My neighbor just did this, you see this wire running from his porch light up to the ceiling fan. LOL

I'm actually looking to do the same thing for my patio, I just don't know where to begin?

I've got my outside motion light wired into an outlet in the garage. It just plugs in. I think that a similar arrangement plugged into a handy outlet would work. All you need is the metal box for the fan mounting, some conduit, some romex, and a plug. It would work until you have the money to have it done properly. Total cost would be about $70.

The guys that built the patio ran the Romex for me and left it hanging inside the eave of my house. I've got an outlet on the patio, so I could put an end on it and just plug it into the outlet, but it's got to be almost as easy to fish it out of the eave and hook it up to the existing switch that runs my patio light.

There are only two wires and a ground wire. Get some fresh wire nuts and splice that fan into the light circuit, it's easy. Can you get to the patio light, or to the wiring that comes out of the switch? Keeping water out and running the conduit nice and clean sounds like your biggest concern.

It's actually pretty easy. The most expensive part is buying the 12-2 wire. Think of running an amp from the battery to the trunk of your car. Well, it's not exactly like that but pretty close. :D If you weren't in Ft. Worth I'd help you out. But then again I'm not a licensed electician.
