SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea threatened Wednesday to wipe the United States off the map as Washington and its allies watched for signs the regime will launch a series of missiles in the coming days.
Off China's coast, a U.S. destroyer was tailing a North Korean ship suspected of transporting illicit weapons to Myanmar in what could be the first test of U.N. sanctions passed to punish the nation for an underground nuclear test last month.
The Kang Nam left the North Korean port of Nampo a week ago with the USS John S. McCain close behind. The ship, accused of transporting banned goods in the past, is believed bound for Myanmar, according to South Korean and U.S. officials.
The new U.N. Security Council resolution requires member states to seek permission to inspect suspicious cargo. North Korea has said it would consider interception a declaration of war and on Wednesday accused the U.S. of seeking to provoke another Korean War.
"If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and people of Korea will ... wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all," the official Korean Central News Agency said.
The warning came on the eve of the 59th anniversary of the start of the three-year Korean War, which ended in a truce in 1953, not a peace treaty, leaving the peninsula in state of war.
The U.S. has 28,500 troops in South Korea to protect against an outbreak of hostilities.
Tensions have been high since North Korea launched a long-range rocket in April and then conducted its second underground atomic test on May 25.
Reacting to U.N. condemnation of that test, North Korea walked away from nuclear disarmament talks and warned it would fire a long-range missile.
North Korea has banned ships from the waters off its east coast starting Thursday through July 10 for military exercises, Japan's Coast Guard said.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Wednesday that the North may fire a Scud missile with a range of up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) or a short-range ground-to-ship missile with a range of 100 miles (160 kilometers) during the no-sail period.
A senior South Korean government official said the no-sail ban is believed connected to North Korean plans to fire short- or mid-range missiles. He spoke on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.
U.S. defense and counterproliferation officials in Washington said they also expected the North to launch short- to medium-range missiles. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence.
South Korea will expedite the introduction of high-tech unmanned aerial surveillance systems and "bunker-buster" bombs in response to North Korea's provocations, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper said, citing unidentified ruling party members.
Meanwhile, a flurry of diplomatic efforts were under way to try getting North Korea to return to disarmament talks.
Russia's top nuclear envoy, Alexei Borodavkin, said after meeting with his South Korean counterpart that Moscow is open to other formats for discussion since Pyongyang has pulled out of formal six-nation negotiations.
In Beijing, top U.S. and Chinese defense officials also discussed North Korea. U.S. Defense Undersecretary Michele Flournoy was heading next to Tokyo and Seoul for talks.
South Korea has proposed high-level "consultations" to discuss North Korea with the U.S., Russia, China and Japan.

Let me break it down to show how badass our military is, and how easily we could turn NK into a smoking crater-

-Our navy is bigger than the rest of the world's combined
-We have 12 aircraft carriers, more than the rest of the world combined (the nearest nation has 2)
-We have 6 amphibious assault carriers just as good as britains carriers
-We us the m1 abrams tank, a combat vehicle so badass that most have been destroyed due to incompetence
-We USED to use the f15 eagle, a plane with over 100 kilss and ZERO losses, but some geniuses thought, "hey, this shit sucks" and designed the superior f22 raptor
-We have 18,169 airborne combat systems, NK has 1,778
-We have 14,997 airports, NK has 77
-We spend $515,400,000,000 on national defence, NK spends $5,500,000,000
-We have thousands of ICBMs that are maintained and ready to go with out any issues, NK may have enough spent fuel rods to make 2 nuclear weapons.

Heres another good break down-

The problem with bombing them is that they do have more artillery than any other nation on earth.... and Seoul being not far from the DMZ would get blown to bits at any sign of aggression by us. South Korea is a close ally of ours, and I need not remind you that we keep 30,000 troops stationed on our side of the DMZ.

CNN states 28,500 total in S.Korea.
Thats why we go in at night and blow that shit hole up, then send them a nice get well card that says they will get it twice as hard if anything is fired toward s.korea

Yep I ninja edited that, in the article on Cracked is says 60k though. Its not that easy, nk actually does have nearly as many troops as we do.

All of this is well and good, but the main issue we need to look at is the idea of a madman with the ability to launch 1 ICBM. We are always at a state of readiness, but in order for us to deploy our force we must first be provoked. So, in order for us to invade NK we must first be fired upon. Now, maybe with Bush at the helm he may have used the boarding of the Kang Nam and the issue of war from NK as the smoking gun to invade, but with Obama, we will have to be fired upon in order for him to take action :(. So, American lives will HAVE to be lost in order for Obama to take any action what so ever. This is truly a sad time for our country :sadwavey:

The problem with North Korea is anything worth while is in tunnels and bunkers. While doing road marches in Korea while at Camp Greaves, it was nothing to be wandering around and see a massive hole in a mountain where one of the facades broke showing the tunnel system. Then you call it in and it's closed.

We don't know where there tunnels are. However, if we hit it hard enough and constant enough, we may do some damage. But I don't think we'd get Kim Il.

I'll agree with this. No POTUS would let an action like that go without response or punishment. Quite simply, we're currently trying to play by the rules of the UN and using political posturing as required. The minute someone in N Korea launches a missile, you'll see our guys go wheels up to show them the way it really works.

Hell, even Clinton responded to stuff using the military. He lobbed a few cruise missiles and claimed his response was appropriate. I wonder if Lewinsky had his dick in her mouth as he ordered the missilies launched? :hump:

I have no more love for him than any of you sane guys do (not refering to liberal insanity) I think that he will step up should DPRK attack Americans. Hell, even Clinton responded to stuff using the military. He lobbed a few cruise missiles and claimed his response was appropriate. I wonder if Lewinsky had his dick in her mouth as he ordered the missilies launched?

Hooray for million dollar missiles launched at ten dollar tents with the intent of hitting a camel in the ass!

North Korea is like a little kid with a toy gun tugging on his moms purse.

I just hope the people in charge react quickly to something getting lobbed our way, and shoot the fucker down before it makes it halfway here. We all know we have the technology to shoot that kinda shit right out of the sky. I just hope they don't sit back and wait for it to land, just to see if it's real or not.

Is everyone stupid or do you guys just not read the news? The missile that will be launched has a range of 4000 miles Hawaii is 4500 miles away. Im just askin here, I am more concerned on them attacking our troops in SKorea or try some suicide attack on the mainland US.

I think you are wrong, if North Korea attacked the US I think Obamanamnama will take more action that you would expect him to. I dont think he is as soft as everyone thinks he is. He is still a flaming douche, dont get me wrong. I fucking hate the guy. I just dont think he is completely stupid, just partially.

Like Clinton and the Balkans, he will be forced to on many different levels. That's the only reason why.

Fucking Bosnians love Clinton cause he bailed them out. Little do they know he really did not want to do so. If it was REALLY up to Clinton, they all could've killed each other.

Actually it would suck if S.Korea gets messed up. They have come a long way.

Not to mention that the troops they send to support ours in places like Iraq - truly do work. From what I saw, at least half the other country's troops don't do anything other then eat US sponsored food, work out in our gyms, work in our building and otherwise leech our stuff. All the while their governments claim to support us. Bastards.

Would you be willing to bet your life on that missile not being one the Chinese snuck in the back door to them? Do you know with 100% certainty that missile won't make it? You don't believe everything you read on the internet do you? How far is 500 miles to a missile? Another couple minutes?

I don't care if they fire it 3000 miles towards Hawaii, that's f'ed up if they do.

I'm pretty sure if you adjust the trajectory, you could get another couple hundred miles off that missile. It's frightening

No I would not bet my life that they couldnt get another 500 miles out of whatever they are launching. No I do not know that it wont make it. Hell no I do not believe much of what I read on the web or hear on the news.

Did I say it could never happen? Nope. Did I say that I havent concedered that the AP has there facts wrong? Nope. Did I say that "I dont think it can happen to us"? Nope.

I was simply pointing out the fact that everyone is getting so worked up, "OMG, its going to hit Hawaii". My point is we dont know what the fuck is going to happen, thats it. But I think that assuming that it WILL hit Hawaii is about as smart as NKorea launching one at us in the first place. I will say that it does concern me that they are even thinking about launching it in our general direction. It concerns me that they are threatening nuclear war on the US. It also concerns me that they have threatenedto wipe us off the map when we have two wars we are currently trying to win. I know they wont succeed with the destruction of the USA, but if they even try it is scary enough. The shear number of innocent American lives lost would be astounding.

You are the epitome of the person with the pre-9/11 mentality. It can't happen to us, this is the USA!

I didnt say it couldnt happen to us, I simply referred to the news article stating the ranges of the missile and the distance of Hawaii from the launch. If NKorea wants to hit us, they will. 9/11 was a huge wake up for me in terms of our vulnerability. Keep in mind I turned 18 the day after 9/11 so I was still rather naive. Thanks for grouping me into the people that keep there head burred in the sand after one post, you know me all so well. Get to know me a bit better before you accuse me of being naive.

Holy hell, I said I dont think that changing the trajectory will give it another 500 miles. Did I say I wasnt going to be pissed if they splash a missile 500 miles off our coast? I understand your point and I feel the same way as you, just merely saying I think its a bit more complicated than shooting it a bit higher.

Hey look, our ICBMs still work!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090629/ap_on_re_us/us_missile_test

Just for reference it can carry a 300 kiloton warhead 8100 miles away at 15k mph. Meaning we could incinerate all of Pyongyang in less than half an hour with a single missile.

There isn't any media around NK, I wouldn't be suprised at all if there is an accident while testing one of their warheads one day. You can't use a regular cruise missile since they'd be spotted but a conventional warheaded ICBM going Mach23 might just do the trick. Seeing as how they fly up to 700 miles in altitude and pretty much drop straight now it'd be difficult to prove we had anything to do with it.

And to think, our missiles that are declassified (minuteman 3) were deployed in 1970. I bet 40 years worth of R&D could come up with some even better weapons systems.
