View Full Version : Looking to Stain Patio!

We finally decided we're going to stain our back patio. Also, we want to add another section of concrete to extend the patio a bit more.
Is it complicated to extend your concrete, to do it yourself? We aren't looking to add alot. I'm just not sure if this is something to hire someone to do or I could probably do it myself?
Will this cause any issues when staining? Our current slab is about 3 years old, I didn't know if it would stain differently then a fresh new slab?
Also, what's the easiest process for this? I know I need to clean the concrete fairly well, and possibly sand it down a bit.
What's the best cleaning agent? Any preference on type of stain you recommend?
Thanks

When I had the back patio built ..etc..etc we removed the old slab since it was just a slab. No rebar..etc. There was no significant cost savings from leaving it either since it was small in comparison to the new slab. (Also, the way it was leveled - think it would've posed a problem for drainage with the slab)
If you plan to put weight on your extended patio (in our case a hot tub was our "weight") you'll want rebar. At that point you'll needed to figure out of it the little slab you have now has it and if not - what to do from there. I would demo it and just start new.
As for the process of what happened. Get someone (friend or family) who knows concrete if you can. Get it all formed up/rebar secured. Rent some wheelbarrows. Order the concrete and have them all over when it shows up and then start hauling it. Leave the guy who knows what he/she is doing out back to spread/smooth it and help him as necessary.
When done, scribe initials and pictures as desired while drinking beer and watching it dry.
That's more or less how we did it here, but I'm sure there is a 1001 other ways too.

New concrete will take stain differently than old concrete. With the difference in the finish and porosity, I'd start new if you can, to keep it all uniform.

I would at least bore horizontal holes into the existing and insert 1ft rebar sections. This locks them together so if there is any indifferent ground movement you dont have one rise or drop below the other. There may be another way to remedy it

Do it, it'll look nice. Here's what ours looks like.

You can always pour the new patio wait for it to cure and then put an overlay on it. There is another thread in here with a concrete stain place over on I35E in Carrolton. They will provide you with everything you need.
I am getting ready to score my back patio and then stain it.

Its hard to give you any advice not knowing what you are looking to accomplish. There are solid color stains and then there is the Kamiko type stains. Some require a muriatic acid etching, and others require you not to etch with acid.
What is it that you are trying to achieve. Pics?
