Finally, at long last, we have officially apologized for the actions of people we never knew. People that really no one we ever new, new.

Senate Backs Apology for Slavery
Resolution Specifies That It Cannot Be Used in Reparations Cases

Friday, June 19, 2009

The Senate unanimously passed a resolution yesterday apologizing for slavery, making way for a joint congressional resolution and the latest attempt by the federal government to take responsibility for 2 1/2 centuries of slavery.

"You wonder why we didn't do it 100 years ago," Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), lead sponsor of the resolution, said after the unanimous-consent vote. "It is important to have a collective response to a collective injustice."

This recent willingness to deal with the nation's difficult racial history has come about in part because of President Obama's election, said Rep. Stephen I. Cohen (D-Tenn.), who began pushing for an apology more than a decade ago when he was a state senator and pronounced himself "pleased" with the Senate vote.

Still, Cohen said, "there are going to be African Americans who think that [the apology] is not reparations, and it's not action, and there are going to be Caucasians who say, 'Get over it.' . . . I look at it as something that makes people think."

Even among proponents of a congressional apology, reaction to yesterday's vote was mixed. Carol M. Swain, a professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University who had pushed for the Bush administration to issue an apology, called the Democratic-controlled Senate's resolution "meaningless" since the party and federal government are led by a black president and black voters are closely aligned with the Democratic party.

"The Republican Party needed to do it," Swain said. "It would have shed that racist scab on the party."

Getting barraged by dumb-dumbs on a day to day basis. It's just more that a man can bear.

So what they're saying is that because it didn't come from Republicans it doesn't mean shit? If I had my way I'd hold a press conference and tell them to clean the sand out of their pussies and quit whining about shit that didn't happen to them. but that's just me.

I agree. This happened a LONG time ago. Do I get an appology from the White House for infringing on my rights?

My mom's folks came to Texas from Italy in 1902. My dad's folks came here from Germany in 1885. Piss on 'em, and their "apology"...:147:

How was it the Republicans' responsibility to apologize? The Democratic Party was the pro-slavery party, and Lincoln was a Republican. Why should Republicans apologize to folks they helped free?

Actually, the family members I had in the war were on the Confederate side. That being said, we've never owned slaves in my family, and prior to the Civil War, they fought on the American side against Ferguson at the Battle of Kings Mountain. I figure it evens out.

It's funny how no one seems to remember this.....
Most minorities embrace a party that backed slavery and then they call Republicans racist....

I had family killed on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line and they paid their dues in blood.

Slavery was wrong, and the war was a huge cost to everyone.... It has been time to move on for a LONG, LONG time....

The apologists can go pound sand as far as I am concerned....

My ancestors owned slaves. I'm not sorry because I've never owned slaves.

In fact, my family is being turned into slaves with all of Bama's huge spending.

Yup didn't they switch sides back when they was a big movement looking for reparations, and the left came up with welfare?

Well if they are going to do this. Does this mean they will be apologizing to my ancestry? I mean they did, damn near commit genocide on the American Indians.

But on a serious note. WTF!

Slavery was abolished after the civil war! The 13th amendment keeps it from happening again! There is there apology!

And are they going to ask the African tribes that rounded up the people and sold them to the shipping merchants that transported them here to be sold as slaves?

Are they going to ask the German, English, Swedish, French, maritime merchants to apologize for buying and selling them?

Are they going to ask the English courts (in America at the time 1692) to apologize for starting slavery?

The point, we (the common people) did not start, or participate in slavery. It was the rich aristocrats that started it, and continued it after 1776. An it was the average Joe (us) that ended it with blood!

In conclusion, its not my fault! Yes I'm sorry your ancestors where treated like shit, now get over it! You are in the greatest country in the world because of it.
