if i dont do any downloading or anything like that will the xbox 360 arcade version suffice? i dont put music or anything like that on it. does it have enough space to save games and do all the actual gaming stuff?

No, you'll have to buy a memory card to save your games and profiles. If you buy a memory card new they're half the price of the 20gb hard drive which is lame.

edit: They don't even sell the 20gb hdd's anymore actually. The 60gb has replaced it, but its price has not. It's still ($100).

If you just play games and dont download any content it will work. By content I mean ANY add ons (Maps, guns, anything extra) If you purchase the Arcade new I believe it comes with a 256mb card, so that would be enough to save games. However you will want to download stuff and you will eventually by the hard drive.

If you're buying it for a 6 year old, buy the arcade version.
If you enjoy playing games, love downloading new content (cars, maps, guns, updates, etc etc), buy one with a hard drive.

You can get refurbished hard drives pretty cheap. Hell, you can get a new 120gig for $120 at amazon. If I remember right, ever since microsoft went to the "new xbox experience" dashboard, you have to have a hard drive.

Isn't it sad that we consider a lowly 120GB hard drive to be "cheap" for $120. Microsoft must be making a killing on these things.

Not true, I have a friend that has the new interface and still has his 256MB card. I am not saying that it isnt better to have the HD, just trying to answer you initial question.

You're gonna want the HD. Playing any FPS game should always be accompanied by your favorite motivational theme music.

after xmas they had a arcade upgrade for like 25 bucks to get a refurbished 20gig hd. that would be a good deal. new xbox and a basically new hd for under 250.

you also need a hard drive if you want to play any original xbox games.

also, it's nice to have a hard drive so you can install the games to the HD. you still need the disc in when you play but your xbox will be much quieter, the dvd drive in those things are loud. additionally, games will load faster when you do this.
