So I've been kicking around the idea to have a slide of my design to be machined for my colt and recently came upon the access of a full machine shop with all of the proper mills. I was just wondering if there was any specific liscense you needed to produce your own gun parts? (I may also be doing the hammer and triger as well) I figured that if I was going to do it I might also make a small run of it and sell the extras, to try to make a small amount of the money and time spent back.

Main thing here is, is it illegal in any way to produce your own gun parts, or a certain type of gun part (of coarse the obvious auto sear). Or is it pretty much just open game? And if it's not illegal to make them for yourself is it illegal to sell them?

Thanks a lot for any response.

Whatever part usually has the serial number is what would normally be controlled, and need a form 1, unless it's NFA, and then some form 4's might be in order. This thread is not a good first step, you need to read up on the applicable laws before you go making guns.
