Looking for a good radar detector. Saw the Escort solo in the classified section for $280, is this a good unit?

I've got the 8500 X50, and it has served me very well. You'll get the V1 nuthuggers, that swear by the directional arrows. Personally, I don't have a need for arrows to know which direction it's coming from. I've got eyes for that. A simple alert is all I require.

I've only received 1 ticket since I bought it, and it was an instant on laser. Nothing I could have done would have gotten me out of that ticket.

I have one of these, they work pretty good. when they pop you with on/off laser by the time it goes off they already have you. I did get pulled in Irving one time on the hwy and it never went off at all. I remember this because the cop spocifically asked me if it went off.

All in all, with the exception of not detecting pop laser ( i dont see how any dectector could), it is a good radar detector.

The price is kinda high, I bought mine used off of the board about 4-5 years ago and only paid 150.00

oh yeah, plan on putting batteries in it about every 4-6 weeks.

LOL. If you're saying that the X50 doesn't, you're a liar.

Or hardwire it, bypassing the batteries all together.

yeah, but thats kinda the whole point of being "solo", but yes you can do that also.

I kinda like just pulling it off the windshield and put it in the other cars real quick.

Yeah, the price seems kind of high to me also, but I want something good. Heading out for a trip to Oklahoma this week, and would like to pick something up before then. Can you guys suggest something that will work for me? I prefer to not have it installed in the vehicle.

V1 nut hugger here. Great radar, I've had it close to 10 years. Yes I've gotten popped for speeding but every time it's been at night, heading down the highway to fast and by myself. Pretty hard to avoid the instant on no matter what radar you have if you have no warning because your the only car on the road.

For those of you criticizing the directional arrows, have you ever used a V1 before? Yes eyes help for looking for threats but it's just another advantage you'll have over others. And what about the bogey counter? There have been many times I've run by a trooper parked underneath an over pass and he's had a "partner" waiting further down the road for the people that sped up after they thought it was safe. Again, just another tool that you can use to your advantage.

And about the cordless Escort. Great idea but I'd always be worried about running out of "juice" at an inopportune time or if performance diminishes when the battery gets low. Just my $.02.

I've borrowed a V1 for a handful of road trips and it has saved me every time.

I'm no expert but to my understanding about radar detectors, unless you have a ricer and just want more cool LEDs in your car, spend a lot of money on a good detector or just eat the ticket every once in a while. This is one of the things that you get what you pay for.

Yes as stated above if you get popped then you are screwed regardless. I think one some of the better detectors can detect if other cars are being lasered around you better so you can slow down before they get you. For this, just know that if you're going through a rich city that they'll have lasers and to just stay behind someone.

Bogey counter? Before my 8500 x50 got stolen(out of my toolbox, in my garage) I never got a ticket after the install. Had it hardwired in above my rear view mirror so it was out of sight, also had the laser defuser setup(never got a ticket from a cop lasering:D, loved it but expensive). You have several different display options, one shows what frequency(ka,etc.) and then the number of signals with the strength. That saved me a couple times alone. I can definitely swear by the x50. Best one I've ever used. If you want to get a passport they all use the same power cord and EW at Autosound can hardwire them for you. He's always done right by me and my friends. (Although I think he swears by the v1:p )

If THEY ALL sucked, i don't know how mine could have possibly saved me at least $1k? Maybe it wasn't the detector but just a faulty laser gun or radar gun? not likely

I have a 9500iX and a X50, both rock. The iX has GPS and GPS speed and both of em have car voltage which is good for my Slowbra that doesn't have a fucken volt gauge and are prone to blow alternators.

The GPS speed is dead accurate with other Navi units I have used, to the half of a mph.

The iX also has speed traps, airplane radar, instant on, red light cameras, and speed cameras... it will also allow you to block out certain spots that false, and after the third time in the same location it blocks it for you (you can turn it back on if you ever wanted to in that blocked location).

It saved me from 3 tickets already driving to andrew's house on Park Road. Bunch of cops sitting in parked cars radaring and its 30 mph where it should be 45.

I like the X50, but the 9500 is just so much better. It also talks to you so you don't have to stare at it, and when it goes off, it flashes your speed so you don't have to look down at your dash (again not taking eyes off road long for a glance at the radar).

My dad has a V1, and that pile of shit falses all the damn time. Get a Escort Nick, you can't go wrong with any of em. You can get a new X50 at Best Buy if you can find em for like 310 bucks on clearance, but I'd just get the iX just cause it's cool as hell and has GPS.

I bought a Whistler 1743 for 99cents off ebay, spent $8 for a wiring kit, and it is my sober driving buddy, saved my ass atleast 6 times in the 3 months Ive had it.

Though it yells "LASER" non-stop near the airport, and "X BAND" at every damn store, it's got a decent range. Cant drive without it now, very sad.

Slowing down is an idea, but I like knowing a cop is nearby if I cant see them and if you can afford the V1 or Escort, do it.

This is my baby, i love her. I have the hook up and someone nabbed it new, in box, with hardwiring kit for $225 :)

So far, it's done everything my buddy's V1 has, as well as picked up signals before his a few times.
Oh, and it's picked up KU band. . . who uses that?

I love the gps filter which lets me mark spots to deactivate false alerts from automatic doors.

ANother cool feature the gps has is that it'll tell you how fast you were going when you picked up the radar.

Yep thats the older version of the one I have, and I love it as well... If you go into preferences, you hold the right two buttons for 3 seconds, click the front right button (bottom by looking at it) and you can set it to speed which shows your actual speed at all times... Thats pretty awesome imo. You can also as I said before set it to do vehicle voltage to make sure the car is charging.:) Best radar out there imo, who cares about arrows and false alarms?

I have the SR7 and ZR3 combo. It's pretty damn untouchable. I really don't speed, though. It's just another toy.
