What are the other Motorcycle forums based in this area? Looking for newb advice on getting into riding. (I read the thread here).
So far I've got:
1. Take the class
2. Buy the right gear
3. Don't start with a 1000
4. Don't stunt in the streets
5. Start with a 1000
I'm leaning towards a Ninja 250 because they are inexpensive, I'm hoping that will be ok for a 250lb guy. Feel free to offer any advice.

250 lbs on a 250 would be incredibly boring.

you will outgrow that thing faster that it will take you to go through the riding course.... if you have good self discipline and throttle control there is nothing wrong with starting on something bigger. I would look for a GSXR 750 @ 250 at least

I agree. Anything lower that 600 would not be what your are looking for. If you are serious it would not hurt to take the class. They will be using 250's and you will see it is great for a training bike, but not for a daily rider for a guy your size. If you find you enjoy riding then go out and sit on some bikes by different mfgs to find out what fits your style of riding and body type.

Well, I thought I knew what I was looking for and now you guys have gone and screwed it up :). So many different types of bikes to choose from. I am partial to GSXR's only because I have heard about them alot. I am hoping to find something for around $2500-$3000. If anybody sees or has any bikes or sale in that price range let me know.
What about other bike forums?

I'm 6ft4, 230, DONT get a 250. A 1000cc is fine for your first bike as long as you take the time to ride it and get used to it. I bought an 07 R1 for my first bike and love it.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with starting on a big bike, just don't ride like a fucking idiot.
