I bought a 20rd clip at CTD a year or so ago, and had to do some "filing" to get it to fit perfect and load/unload corectly. It is a composite type, and once filed, it looked and worked great, until I fired it. It jams the front edge of the bullet into the mag. Did I get a bad/soft one, or are they just crap?

They are crap. Everything I have read about SKS mags is its best to just use the stock 5 rounder and be good with stripper clips.

I put the original back in, and tossed the promag POS. I was thinking about looking around for a metal type one, since the one I had when I was a kid was great and I could shoot more than 5 with out reloading, etc.

The metal mags seem to work better, but may require some filing of the stock/mag well to get a good fit. I'll see if I can get a brand and let you know.

I've got a 30rd metal one I've had for years (and has been flawless unmodified). I wanted a slightly smaller capacity one and got the promag. I've had nothing but problems with my promag as well, usually jamming the rounds just above the throat of the barrel.

The factory one is a 10 round magazine.
If you want higher capacity in your SKS you could always go out and look for the Chinese Factory Replacement Mag (Its just like the 10 round mag except it holds 20 rounds.)
If you can find the old USA 30 round SKS mags (metal-they don't make them anymore), they work pretty reliably in the SKS.
I'd just stick with the factory mag. If you want a SKS that takes mags, go buy a Chinese SKS-D. They take AK Mags

same problem here with the mini 14 promag.only mine had no jamming issues.just the tip of the bullet would hit the edge when unloading.i didnt even file it down because it shot flawlessly.
