WASHINGTON (AP) — Calling on Americans to volunteer, President Barack Obama signed a $5.7 billion national service bill Tuesday that triples the size of the AmeriCorps service program over the next eight years and expands ways for students to earn money for college.
...
The legislation provides for gradually increasing the size of the Clinton-era AmeriCorps to 250,000 enrollees from its current 75,000.

So, they current cost for free labor is $76,000 a person, which they never see that much. This has great return on investment all over it. :angryfire:

If anyone is going to restore America, it will be "We the People" NOT Barak Obama.

if we the people are going to restore America, then we the people are going to need college educations. if people can volunteer and do some service for their country for a few years and get their college education payed for, sounds like a good deal for the students and a good deal for the government.

so a student volunteers for 4 years works for the government and gets his or her college payed for, thats less then $20K a year. whats wrong with that?

would you rather the government get larger and spend more by actually hiring people to do these jobs, where you would likely spend well over $30K a year per person, plus benefits.

currently the government gives most of the student financial aid away, all you have to do is ask for it. why not get something back for our money?

Lots of people were, they even held a rally at Madison Square Garden. Times were different and Americans would listen to anyone that told them what they wanted to hear.

Congress established the National Service Trust to provide an AmeriCorps Education Award for members who successfully complete service in AmeriCorps. You can use your AmeriCorps Education Award to pay educational expenses at qualified institutions of higher education, for educational training, or to repay qualified student loans. The award - recently renamed the Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards after Eli Segal, one of the pioneers of the national service movement and the first CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service - is $4,725 for a year of full-time service, and is prorated for part-time. You have up to seven years after your term of service has ended to claim the award.

So you get 4,725 a year for each year you "volunteer" to go to their "qualified" institution wow that's a great deal, and a good way to en steel obama's great worldly values.

That's frightening. People willingly giving their parent's names, locations, even photos to some person who does not even declare what he wishes to do. Scary, ignorant, deceiptful...all in one breath.

There is a program for the government to pay for your college for service. It's the military. Don't like that? There's the Coast Guard, Reserves and National Guard.

it works very similar to the GI bill, so whats wrong with it?

I will give you another example, school districts all over the country are having to fire teachers and administrators, because they can not afford to employ them. so what are the options? raise local taxes. close the schools, or hope someone volunteers.
these incentives make it very attractive for someone to volunteer.

this helps keep taxes down, and government from getting bigger

For starters, the soldiers who have the GI bill RISKED THEIR LIVES TO EARN IT. All these people have to do is kneel at the messiahs feet.

These school districts you speak of could route some of the money they use for LAPTOPS and ESL classes for the immigrants into paying the teachers what they deserve before I put any more money into the blackhole of public education. Paying the teachers what they deserve will entice more teachers back into teaching.

GOVT waste is to blame for the municipalities budget shortfalls, not a lack of funding.
