i had a few LPs and have been looking to add more so i bought myself a good condition vintage Bang & Olufsen rx-2 turntable after looking around for a good long while.

went ahead and ordered a NAD pp-2 phono stage pre-amp (MM/MC) as well.

im not much for buying media but for some reason i love the nostalgia of vinyl so im okay with spending a little money for it. it helps that vinyl is making a reappearance with some new releases coming out with 180-200 gram

anyone here have a decent record collection? where do you guys shop for vinyl?
the only place i can think of is Bill's records and i have never been there.

I'll be building a rig this summer. I've got a lot of vinyl, but nothing on which to play any of it.

As far as purchasing vinyl, I use 3 sources: Good Records in Dallas, a random hippie shop in Deep Ellum the name of which I can't remember for the life of me, and the internet (Ebay/Craigslist)

Ebay has some really great values because of people that don't know what their shit is worth. You can pick up massive inventories for very cheap (e.g. my Rush discography, on vinyl, for $25 shipped). I've been trying to pick up Pink Floyd's discography on vinyl for a while now, but I've yet to see one sell for less than $100.

I have around 500 albums, collected over many years. It's still fun to pull an album out of the sleeve, put it on the turntable and play it. It's a fun ritual that I've been doing since I was a kid. My last girlfriend (15 years younger than me) just did not get all the steps involved in getting sound out of the stereo with records. She just wanted to load a cd and be done with it.

the model of phono preamp above the one i just bought as a usb port. it wasnt worth it for me, but it allows you to hook up any turntable that way you can actually use a better quality turntable. for $99, i wouldnt expect too much out of that one.

good records doesn't have much. all new stuff.

bills records has a shit ton of vinyl. mostly used, some nice stuff, lot of crap too. problem at bills is that you have to be willing to dig, he had a much bigger store but downsized and now its hard to find anything.

bill is a cool guy. wound up spending 2 hours up there, picked up some queen, journey. bought the re-release, re-mastered pearl jam - ten album on 2 180 gram lp. good prices.

I have a small collection of vinyl, but no longer have a turntable. As much as I like the new tech, I also still hang on to the analog medium. I still collect Laser Disc titles and watch them on my Sony LD player that was last produced by Sony over 10 years ago.

Good stuff.

If you are really into this genre you should sample what a high end vacuum tube amplifier sounds like. Very impressive.

well i got my turntable all setup friday afternoon with the nad phono pre-amp. have to say i really like it. at first i had some issues with it but once i got it setup right, it played quit nicely.

i've ordered some much needed accessories now like a proper brush and record sleeves. made myself some cleaning solution and loaded up on microfiber clothes.

now as far as SQ goes, i listened to a couple of vinyls i have cds or mp3s of to compare the sound differences.

ill give the quality edge to CD in terms of clarity, higher highs and better bass response, but vinyl takes the edge in depth of sound.

while my turntable doesn't hit the highs and lows as well as the CD, it could be blamed on the cartridge or old interconnects but in any case, the vinyl has an element sound i like as more that the digital copy.

with the cd there is a LOT more volume/sound. it's hard to explain. but if you compare the voices between the two, the record just has a warmer more rounded sound while the CD sounds flat in the vocal range.

yea, 980 of them. this is going to take me forever to clean, sort and catalog.
i bought a 5 shelf heavy duty rack so i can wipe all the dust off and chunk the old nasty boxes.

some records are in fantastic shape, some are in terrible condition. either way there a few gems in there.

Made my way up to the Style Station off of 35 just north of Waco this weekend. Picked up Genesis' 3 Sides Live, The Police's Zenyatta Mondatta (One of my favorite commerically successfull albums) and Rush's Signals. I was pumped about signals, as it's one of my Rush discography that needed replacing.

Now I just need to start gathering parts for my rig and throw it together once I'm back in Dallas.

jesus, that's an expensive cartridge! soundsmith makes the catridges for B&O now, and the SMMC1 is $700

It was expensive even back in the '80's when I bought it new along with the B&O turntable from Marvin Electronics in FTW. Their store/shop was near TCU back then if I remember correctly. I used to see OEM B&O cartridges for sale online a few years back, but the best available was the MMC 2.

I think you've missed the point here. Anything I get on vinyl will be a second copy of something I already have on my computer. Sure, you can kind of get the same experience off of vinyl ripped onto your computer but for me, most of the experience is enjoyed in going completely analog; the pain in the ass that is setting it up and maintaining it is part of the allure for me.

nah, i doubt i will be ripping any of it. i didnt buy a usb pre-amp. i may in the future if i find something rare i want to convert.

slowhand is correct, i like the nuances of vinyl and the difference in SQ. i'll buy music i like in vinyl.

I don't have any vinyl at the house, but I'll probably con my parents out of thiers since they never listen to them. Mostly older stuff from the 60's...Beatles, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, The Doors, etc. Most still have the plastic wrap with the price tags.

i still have my Sony Direct Drive turntable i bought brand new in 1980 and it still works perfectly.

one thing i don't miss is how increased bass would vibrate the turntable and cause distorted feedback through the needle which was easy to do especially when you balance out the arm.

need to mount the turntable on a more rigid shelf, wall mounted would work well.

using noise isolation feet would help too.

Bad ass Mo! Im gonna rebuild my dad's old Thorns turntable, he said it just needs a couple hundred bucks of work, and he said I can use it as long as I want. He's also giving me his collection to use. Not as extensive as what you scored, but its about 150 albums and its old rock I grew up on like Aerosmith, Heart, Stones, Doobie Brothers, Skynard, Boston, etc, so most of it doesnt suck.

Can't wait to get it all hooked up, I wanna come buy and check out your setup, it looks sick. Are those KEF speakers?

Will do! Oh and in case you didn't know, Best Buy has some albums re released... I know for certain I saw GnR Appetite for $11.99! with Original album cover etc. Also saw Metallica's new album and some other stuff. It was on an end cap and the prices seemed really reasonable.

Balance the arm? Are you using the recommended downforce for your cartridge? It sounds like you don't have enough.

I've got a decent collection of records that I started back in 1975. The Grassroots greatest hits was my first one. It's been played maybe 5 times. I use to record my records to 8-track, then cassette, so that I wouldn't wear them out. I was/am very picky about anyone I let touch my LP's.
