If you have an unlimited data plan on your phone, can your provider tell if you're using it for interweb access on a PC?

Does it matter if you have an unlimited data plan?

Sprint will disconnect you if it suspects you have your cellphone acting as a portal to a PC to connect to the internet.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. They have tethering packages for the PDA's/Smart phones but not what I'm using. I don't see how they can decipher if it was or not.
I only ask to have the option open when we travel to help keep the kids entertained on the road.
EDIT: NO way in hell I'd sub it for my 20/5 Fios.

I miss FiOS. I'm stuck with 10/1 with Time Warner. I don't miss spending the monthly cash on FiOS though.
I have an iphone, and use alot of data throughout the month. I'm not sure how they would find that out.

Shoot, were on the 20/5 and Extreme HD Package for 79.99 before the gubment rapes for their piece. I have an SE W760 that I debranded off ATT's CRAP firmware and use it all the time by itself. I used almost 200 megs last month just posting here and on other forum. I guess that's a lot anyhow. The Opera mini browser is FAR better that the crap these non-smart phones come w/.

I'm tethered right now with my iPhone. You got me intersted in trying it. I'm shocked at how fast it is.

how?
If your phone is jailbroken, download and install PDANET, and then install pdanet on the computer that you're going to tether.
that's it.

From what I've read, they can't tell if you are tethered. They can only guess due to your data usage. Usually a person will transfer a lot more data with their laptop than they will with a PDA.
My recommendation is that if you use tethering (and I do with my iPhone) then you need limit yourself. Use it only for email and websurfing. Avoid large file transfers as much as possible. Of course your carrier might not give a shit because this isn't a widespread problem for them. I bet only a fraction of a percent of their customers actually do this.

Google up iPhone Dev Team and read up on Jailbreaking. You have to jail break your phone to do this.
After jailbreaking, open Cydia or Installer (apps installed when Jailbreaking) and download the PDANET app. Go to PDANETs website and learn the details on making it work.

Fist go here and download the software.
http://www.quickpwn.com/
Also, go here and make sure you have downloaded the iPhone firmware that you're currently running. You have to have a physical copy saved somewhere. QuickPwn will ask for you to browse to it. MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE PROPER FIRMWARE FOR YOUR PHONE, wether it's 2g or 3g. GET THAT PART RIGHT.
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750
after you install, make sure iTunes is running.
Plug in your iPhone and make sure iTunes recognized your phone.
Run the quickpwn software, and MAKE sure you follow the directions exactly.
That's it, just let your phone do it's thing. It'll reboot when it's done.
As for tethering, do what i said in an earlier post.
********IF YOURE ASKED FOR BOOTLOADERS, there are 2 you will need, BL-39 and BL-46.
Download them here

I thought the sole purpose of tethering was to get internet access? That's how they explained it to me at Verizon.

So it would seem that it would be quite easy to tell, but do they even care that much? Probably not.

I've been tethering my Nokia E70 for nearly 2 years on an unlimited plan and never had one question yet from ATT. Admittedly the data is horribly slow (apparently the phone is not connecting at 3G speeds) and last time I did a significant download for windows update it was downloading at 32kb/s...but it is fine for most internet use and I've even used it to stream XM radio live and it worked great for several hours. I'm considering upgrading to a newer phone that supports higher speeds for data.
