View Full Version : Quickly erase a floppy disk

I have a whole bunch of 3.5" floppy disks that need to be erased for security purposes before being thrown out. Back in the day, I remember a handheld device that you put over the disk, hit a button, and it demagnetized the disk. I can't seem to find them now.

Any ideas on how to quickly erase the data? I don't have any floppy drives to format them with, plus that would take forever.

break them and slide them thru a shredder after taking the metal ring off

Put them through a HD paper shredder or get a big magnet from a car audio sub.

Gasoline and a match will erase the shit out of them. :)

use a magnet from a 12or15 speaker, but seriously why even care. hackers and idenity theft a-holes probably dont have a 3.5 drive either.

anyone in the IT field still has floppy drives, maybe they aren't used everyday, but they do have a purpose at times.

Smash them with a hammer. Atleast it'd be fun.

This looks like a fun way to do it. I wonder how many floppy disks it would take to stop one.

All I did with my old 3.5" diskettes was snap them in half or otherwise crinkle the hell out of them until unusable. Then stab it with a knife.

Trust me, unless you're up to something no one is going to want the data on those disks THAT bad.

just take them outside on the cement, and pond each one with a hammer hard, it will imprint the grain of the cement into the magnetic disc, ruins them.

Eat them! The gastric acid in your stomach is made up of hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride and potassium chloride. It's low pH levels can chemically break down the film on the floppies, causing all the information to be erased.

I wonder what would happen if someone had that injected into their veins?

Tear floppy apart and scorch your lighter across it a few times.

It would be a painful death, I'm sure.

I just split the plastic apart and pull out the 'disk' and cut it up.

If you are talking about 20-30 I would cut them up. If we are talking about 50+ a nice fire would do the trick. A bondfire, some beer, and a few friends sounds like a good time.:beerchug:
