I'm looking to get a rifle, and for reliability reasons I think I'm going to go with an AK rather than an AR. I've noticed they don't seem to be as popular (most people seem to get ARs in the US), and the information isn't as abundant. I've read some about them but I figured I might as well ask the experts here for their opinions.

Is this a good gun?

I know $1000 is toward the upper end of AK costs, so I don't know really what I'm paying for with this rifle. I don't see where it says whether it's stamped or milled, I'm assuming stamped. Is a milled receiver that much better, other than being a little more accurate? I read that the tradeoff is a little more weight; are they any less reliable when dirty? The main thing I want in a rifle is to be able to depend on it without having to pamper it, hence my decision not to get an AR-15.

Any more AK facts I should know about? All I really know about them is that they will supposedly always fire, no matter what, and they're a little cheaper than AR-15s, bullets are a little heavier, and they aren't as modular. Thanks in advance for the wisdom.:rambo:

:edit:
Also found this one on the same page, looks pretty much identical, except one is Russian made and one isn't. Is Russian $170 better?

One thing about AK's that I have always read/heard is that the reason the damn things are so reliable and will shoot in almost any condition is the loose tolerances.

Yeah I understand the tradeoff, but I figure if I ever need a rifle like this, reliability will be way more important than being able to put 10 shots inside a quarter at 300 yards.

I would think of it , like if you take care of it it will take care of you.
and lets not forget that you are not in the same conditions that those
rifles are normally used in so reliability is not a concern.
so with that said 10 rounds inside a quarter at 300 yards would sell me.

This thread isn't about whether I want to get an AK or an AR, I've already decided that.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. I want an AK, I just don't know how to spot a good value in one and I figured people on here would be able to tell me what to look for.:)

Listen to the suggestions... now that an AK is close to the same price as an AR - get a damn AR - they are a much better gun.

I kind of look as AK's as a "Hey, look what I have!" kind of gun, they don't really have much use outside of that. I've had a couple AK's, and when their ammo was cheap, they were fun to bump fire and try to hit things (note: try) - and that was when they were $350 for a good one. With the current prices - it's no longer worth the tradeoffs when compared with an AR.

Are they really that inaccurate? What kind of groups will it shoot at 200 yards?

X2 what others have opined.

Having said that, either of those firearms will be OK, and you will like them. In my experience there is not a lot of difference between the lowest priced AK (like the Romanians) and the highest price AK. Finish and quality maybe, but they all function about the same. Last year I spent almost $1000 building a high end RPK, I did it for fun, learning to build, and looks but it's only marginally better than one I could have gotten for half that price (at the time).

Enjoy your AK (and then step up to an AR or FAL)

$1000 is a bit high.
I'll sell you one for 600 with some extras. it's just a romanian though.
