Curious if anyone has any input/experience with these devices. Scenario - One room is hotter then the rest....HVAC peeps say ducts/etc are okay...I believe them, only room upstairs and it gets hot.

They seem to cheap to be worth much, but I've been wrong before.

Only helps some when the system is running.

Hmmm, that makes sense too and would HELP in theory. I'd think.

Does the door stay open or closed when it gets hot? Is there a air return in the room?

No door on the room, we just have a nice curtain up there basically. There is a return up there, with 2 vents.

hahaha....what a cock-a-mamy idea. You just need your system balanced is all to direct more air upstairs.

My master bedroom is the hottest/coldest room in my house depending on what time of year it is and it pisses me off to no end. I'd bet money there is at least a 5degree tempature change from that room to any other room in the house. You can feel it the second you walk in the room. I've had the builder out at the house and they've balanced the system twice, but it hasn't seemed to help any. Granted there is a shit load of air coming out of vent but it doesn't seem to be keeping the room as cool as the rest of the house. I have 2 theories on what's causing the problem and I wanted your opinion on the subject. The first theory is that my masterbedroom has a werid vaulted ceiling and I don't beleive that the builder has enough insulation in the attic above my bedroom. The second theory is that I beleive my master bedroom needs another vent added to the room because of its size. The room is about 15x18 and has the same size vent as the smaller bedrooms of the house. I'd appreciate your input on my situation. Thanks

I usually put two vents in a master, especially with ceiling treatments.

See, it's not that I don't agree with you. It's simply that I'm seriously sick of fucking with HVAC companies. What company would you recommend to actually get shit working and/or verify that existing shit is working right?

Probably gonna go postal on the next HVAC company that I spend mucho money with and nothing changes.

the basic problem is that you are not getting enough air in the room that stays warmer. The underlying problem is that you don't have enough insulation. The lack of insulation could be causing an increased heat gain, which would ultimately cause you to need more air. Of course, the more energy efficient thing to do would be to add insulation, but the lack of insulation could be over come by having more air directed to that area.

Builders are not HVAC experts and generally lack the knowledge of what drives the correct design of an HVAC system. The balancing of a system does not mean that all vents flow the same amount of air. Balancing a system is supposed to be done to direct the correct amount of air to each area.

What that correct amount of air is, depends on the heat gains in each room. Now, the placement of vents can play a part, but it would only create either hot spots, or drafts within a room, not really cause an entire room to suffer severe differences in tempearture...unless there isn't enough air being directed to that room.

That being said, your HVAC system only produces a certain amount of air. Adding vents will do nothing but distribute the air differently. It may help, but chances are, it won't. It could even make it worse by not having enough velocity through the vents to "throw" the air the correct distance, which would again, cause hot spots in the room.

There really is no simple answer to fix your problem unfortunately. What you can try, if each register has a built in damper, is you can try shutting closing off each one in the house (not totally, just a bit) until your problem room is tolerable. The down side is that it will possibly effect the temperature in your other rooms.

There could also be a real problem of the fan not being sized correctly. If it doesn't have enough static pressure to get the correct amount of air do the problem room, then that is a different problem all together.

Your best bet it to have an HVAC guy out there and talk through your options, not to just blankently balance the system. I don't know how you would go about finding a company that would know the ends and outs. You might want to call around and see if any have engineers on staff that could help you troubleshoot your problem instead of sending out a tech to just balance the system.

I am not familiar with companies that deal in residential. Like I said above, I would try and find one that has an engineer on staff that knows the ins and out of how an HVAC system works. You can try calling some companies that deal with comercial and see if they do that kind of work, but I would imagine it would cost you.
