Wanting to clean up my mother's yard a bit, as it's quite weed-infested and even barren in some parts.

I've picked up fertilizer, seed, and weed killer (Spectracide Weed Stop + Crabgrass). In which order should I do these steps, and how long of time do I need to wait between each step to ensure her yard looks good?

The neighbor has a gigantic oak tree that blocks light from a portion of her yard, so I'm not sure there's much that can be done for the bare spots. The backyard also needs to TLC, though not nearly as much since the greyhounds she has use it as a racetrack from time to time.

Thanks,

Geof

Too early to seed right now. What type of grass is it?

They make fertilizer/weed killer combined, so I don't see any reason you could not use both rigth now.

Wait till probably May for the grass seed. Temps need to be above like 80 constantly.

I forgot the name of it but go to home depot and ask them for a weed and feed for Bermuda grass( not Scott's). and for your bare spots put down fescue seed. Or if you don't live to far I own a landscaping company and you can pay me to do it all.

What's wrong with scotts?

Anyway, i'd say wait a couple-3 weeks (we get a lot of freezes in march) and then scalp her yard with the mower. Put down some appropriate weed and feed, and water it in. When you get to about the end of may, put down a round of "texas lawn fertilizer" and hand spray for weeds. Use the cheap shit, it will release quickly which is what you want to revive a lawn. Water a lot; keep the lawn moist. Keep spraying down the weeds as they come up. In the late summer put down another round of weed and feed. Put down a round of scotts winterizer in late september. This will help to kill weeds that germinate in the fall.

It will take a 2-3 years to get a vigorous yard going again.
