Went to walmart here in Tyler and they had Federal fmj 100rd's for 39.00. They had 16 box's and I picked up a few. Ive been buying little at a time to stay under the radar from the Wife.

That's 39 cents a round, a good deal by today's prices....

That's a great deal IMHO! I try to avoid FMJ simply because my favorite ranges don't allow them.

Hmm.... So why do certain ranges plaster signs with 'NO FMJ ALLOWED' ? I understand they have the potential to carry very long distances, but most back drops are small mountains (relatively speaking). is it because of potential ricochet?

So they can force you to head into the office to buy some of their overpriced soft point ammo.

Depends on what their backstop is made of. I could see them not wanting to damage their investment. I know the FWPD range cannot take rifle rounds at all, that's why we had to go to Dallas PD's range for qualifications. We use the plastic bullets for zeroing at 25 yards.

I don't know of Alpine's excuse. I tought all of their backstops were made of tons of earth...

I've heard a couple reasons ranging from environmental concerns to fragmentation to misfire impacts

That's why you bury 10-15 rounds under soft point. I did it once to get rid of some fmj that I got for free one time.

I prefer fmj's, i dont need a range to tell me what to shoot. I have 22 acres connected to about 400 acres that I shoot on.

9 times out of 10 it's not the backstop that makes them not allow it. Its their insurance policies that will not allow them to shoot FMJ.

Do you know the specifics on 'why the insurance companies' prohibit FMJ ?

Saw this on Texas Hunting Forum...

Monarch 223 55gr FMJ $6.29 per box at Academy off of cherry lane in west ft worth. Over 90 boxes left.

Why? The range is asking you not to use a certain kind of ammo for a reason.
