View Full Version : Building a range on my land
I have 3.5 acres bout 20mins north of Frisco. We're going to be building our home sometime hopefully in the next year or so, but I want to add an area to shoot my guns. It backs up to a heavily treed 150 acres so I was thinking of either adding a couple of truckloads of dirt at the back right of it. (opposite of house pad) or putting up several layers of railroad ties. What do you guys think, and has anybody done this?

You cannot shoot without special permission on that little of land ... the property needs to be 10 acres or larger if i recall correctly.

I also believe that you have to be in land that is unincorporated. It cannot be inside of a city limits.
You might want to do some research on this before you invest any money that you will probably lose.

I think you are right on that Matt.

To make sure I'm reading this right, you need 50 acres to fire a rifle?

Thats how i read it also ... but if you call the sherriff's office and let them know you will be shooting on your land greater than 10 acres I havent heard of any issues. There is a guy over at texas CHL forum that has 13 acres and has large shoots often, he even has class 3 stuff show up and dosent get bothered.

50 acres to fire any rimfire or centerfire pistol or rifle
that pretty much takes care of everything except shotguns.

lol at having to have 10acres to fire an air rifle or pistol... I don't know if I can even count the number of pellets and BB's I shot in my backyard growing up...

haha yeah, same here.
Thanks for the link man! Not sure how much of a difference it makes, but the land is not annexed to any city.

Hey, I didn't make the law:soapbox:
If they want to play by the rules, then we can play by the rules. I've always wanted a .50 cal black powder rifle anyway...
Actually I'd love a Shiloh Sharps, but that's not black powder...
So even though I live outside any city limits these still apply? :feedback:

Read what Drift Poser posted. If you meet the criteria, then you can't.

You'd better have recorded that coversation and gotten a name, because if you are in violation, no body's gonna take that as an excuse.
Play the CYA game.

Well shit, I'll call the FCSO's to make sure I'm not bringing hell down on us at my place. Although I've never had so much as a nod from my neighbors when I emptied a clip of 7.62 rds into an old grill:D

I know in hunt county if you're in an unincorporated area then fuck em, shoot what you want. If you're in the city limits you have to be on either 5 or 10 acres or larger to shoot a shotgun. No rifles/hand guns in city limits.
Well it's outside city limits in unincorporated area with the nearest neighbor 2 acres out and Tina from the Grayson County Sheriffs office says blaze away. So I'm proceeding.
