View Full Version : Garage insulation
Cost me $40 for everything, what do you think? And it took about 2 hours or so. Well worth the investment. The door faces west so I get all the intense sun light in the after noon.

i did mine a few weeks ago too, except i put it facing the other way. i don't know how much it'll help in the winter, but i know at work we have them insulated like that it makes a HUGE difference on the ones that face the sun in the summer.

Not bad, but I'm gonna need you to come do ours so I can effectively evaluate your performance. :D

Was that that silver bubble sheet that comes in a roll? I did that at our old house where the doors faced west and it will make a HUGE difference come sumer. I think ours cooled like 20 degrees if I recall.

No sweat it was so easy I could do it again.
I was going to face the silver part the other way but I thought it would look cool this way. It was 1/2" thick foam with a white face on the other side. Cost about $8.50 for a 4'x8' sheet and I needed 4 sheets.

I did both my doors in our attached garage as well. Left dead air space in between. Actually quietened my doors down during operation. I considered foil inside and painting the white side to match the walls but thought the aluminum would look better.

Is that stuff at home depot? My garage is cold as shit in the winter and hot as hell in the summer.

Should be. At my home depot it was in he back near the attick insulation. To glue it I just got some construction all purpose liquid nails.

Sweet! That's exactly what I have been wanting to do to our garage door; only problem is right now the door has been acting up & I think I may need a new door soon.

I did mine last year and it made a big difference in the winter. I have a little propane heater in the garage and no matter how cold it is out side I can keep the garage around 70 degree's easily.
I doubled the sheets. The inner layer has the silver facing the door and the outer is facing the garage.

Is it heavy? Just curious if it will affecting the garage door itself.

awesome! Thanks, our garage faces west also... going to try and knock this out this weekend! Cuts with just a razor-knife, I assume?

Yes but make two cuts. First one on the metal side about half way then go over it again to get a nice smooth cut. I had a sharp knife and if I tried to cut all the way through it would mess up the cut.

where did you buy your material? I am finishing my garage out right now, just built cabs, countertops, and paint, with lights etc. my little mini shop, would be very interested in some more details.

I saw it in home depot this wkend... R5 sheets were $12.99 or something like that for a 48x96 sheet.. i have a standard double garage door and I figured that I need 4 sheets and will have practically zero waste in doing so (16 panels, each approx 48x22).. so right around $50 for everything
I'm planning on spray painting one side of each one a color similar to the garage door so it doesn't stand out too much

Just like mine, I did my garage door yesterday. I too used the R5 sheets, only needed 4 of them. I spent about $50 on everything as well. I ended up using that AC Duct Tape, since it's UV protectant and it matches the silver finish of the R5 sheet. Also, it makes it easier to remove when I'm ready to. Took me about 2hrs

Cool thanks, that sounds like a cool idea about painting the side to blend. I have a sprayer if you want to borrow it. spray paint may not be as great of a idea. I am thinking of stealing your idea and literally color matching at the Depot.

I am doing mine with that double sided aluminum bubble wrap stuff.....Texasgarages.com sells a kit that is $195.00 and I can buy the same material at Lowes for half that. I know it is more expensive than the aluminum sided sheets but the R-value on this stuff is R 6.0.
I'll shoot some photos and how long/price it took me to do the job. Yesterday it was 98 degrees in my garage at 4pm.

I'm curious how much difference this stuff will make for mine... I've been trying to get some work done on the car lately and it's a bitch to work in the garage. It was 96 degrees at 9pm in my garage! 76 in the house.... some of it could probably be cured with a fan or something just to move the air around.

I used spray foam to sort of glue mine in and make it stuck. Works awesome. I enjoy the results of this upgrade and I CAN feel the difference in the garage compared to before. Don't be me wrong, it is an west facing garage and it is still hot, but better then before.

Do ya'll think this will make the garage cooler by itself, or only help it hold temperature better once you've cooled/heated it? IOW, will it just be a better insulated hotbox? LOL

I think that when it's summer and the garage door stays shut it will stay cooler than before. Once that garage door comes open and the heat comes in then all bets are off.

That about sums it up. Same for the winter.

It wont make it any cooler but in a case where you have a west facing garage, I would bet you will "feel" the difference standing next to the door. All that heat being radiated should be noticably less than with no insulation at all.

I think my issue is that (3) of the garage walls are outside walls. (2) on the sides and the garage door itself. The attic above the garage isn't insulated. There's NO airflow in the garage at all and it's like an oven in there! It was 96+ with the garage door OPEN!

I just noticed this part of your post, good idea. I may add that to mine this weekend.

I did mine about 2 or 3 years ago and it maded a dramatic difference in the temperature in the garage. My door faces east. Before, if I got within 6 feet of the door, it was like standing next to a heater. Now, you can't feel the heat unless you touch the metal part of the door.
