Then when your handle them you'll know they're loaded until you have a bullet (unfired) in your hand....

Good point I guess. I keep mine loaded anyway. An unloaded gun is about as worthwile as a brick. I might think differently if I ever had kids around my house though.

Lol, yea throwing my gun wouldn't be very good. I'd rather shoot it at an intruder.

It was just a follow up on the hand shooting thread.

1) Treat all weapons as if they are loaded
2) Never point your weapon at anything you do not wish to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire
4) Know your target and what's beyond your target

honestly, I don't keep a round in the chamber for weapons in my house for defense. On me yes, but when it's not on my person I don't keep one in the chamber.
I'll tell you a funny story you might find interesting about this - and one of the reasons why I do this now. Someone had brought me a ruger mkII to repair, they had disassembled the gun and couldn't reassemble it and lost a piece. So, basically I was making a new bolt latch for the gun, but before I installed it, I wanted to first make sure it was cycling round to see if I needed to tear it the rest of the way down. I have dummy rounds for just about every caliber except .22, I put one .22 round in the mag and yanked the bolt back to chamber the round to check it, and bam... thankfully I never point a weapon at myself doing this, or anything alive... but chambering around should never result in a fire. The guy I got the gun from had rebuilt it incorrectly on the top half and I didn't notice the firing pin was stuck out, and not seated, so it fired the round when I chambered it. Well, needless to say I looked ahead of me and saw I shot a hole in the fridge - first thing I thought when it happened was "oh shit, my vettes" cause it was pointed away from me at the garage area, opened up the fridge, and let me tell you...thank god for the sams club's giant pickle container and fruit juice, because it only dented the back of the fridge and didn't tear up the condenser. Just shows how careful you have to be.

Ditto. Weapons in the house are loaded but not chambered. Weapon in the car is chambered.
