The 1:7 will stabilize heavier bullets better than the 1:9. A 1:9 is good, in my opinion reliably out to about 300 yards, 500 meters is about 550 yards, so you might want to look into a 1:7. The 69-59 grain bullets are going to be your choice for a 1:9 twist @ 500 meters - so you might see better benefits with a 1:7 barrel. But just remember, if you're wanting a short barrel you're going to want a faster twist. But, to surmise all of this I would recommend a 1:7 if you're serious about shooting out to 500m.

Most of my shooting is going to be within 300m, but I might take a shot out to 500m ... I may just stick with the 1/9 twist and buy a .308 bolt gun for anything further out. I hate to have my hands tied on ammo avalability, its bad enough as is :banghead:

Why not just go 1/8 and have the best of the both worlds?

You only need faster twist with bigger bullets, which are more expensive.
For typical 55gr bulk FMJ, 1:9 is excellent.
1:9 is very flexible, can shoot anything, 75gr and under, accurately.
If it were a 20in HBAR or varmint gun, get 1:8. Then you can shoot some super duper 80gr SMK or VLD target bullets.
Lots of long distance shooters pulled back off the 90gr VLD's because even 1:6.5 wouldn't stabilize and the 80gr were shooting great and do pretty well for long distance shooting in the wind(okay comparatively to 50-60gr .223 :)).
I think the 1:7 twist, the military used, was for 77gr, but I am talking out my butt at this point.

In my opinion, stick with the 1:9 twist.
If you want to shoot past 200 yards, ditch the .223 and get a .308/.30-06...... etc..

What barrel length/gas system/load are you using?
1:9 will be plenty good out to 500m if you are using a rifle gas system/barrel equivalent. People who say the .223/5.56 sucks past 300m can't shoot for shit.
Now, if like your title alludes, you're using a carbine...you may have more trouble.

16" barrel, chrome lined, carbine gas system, load depends. I had the chance to swap my used 1/9 upper for a new 1/7 upper but passed on it.
