View Full Version : We need a get together... anyone have some land? :)

I've accumulated quite a bit of FMJ ammo I can't use at any ranges, and I have a few pounds of tannerite that's been burning a hole in the closet for some time. We've gone back and forth with a few board members with land about how we could get together and shoot - but is there anyone willing to step forward and actually put something together?

I would be down for it, I just don't have any land. I was actually looking at buying some tannerite online tonight.

Based on my past experience on non-drinking G2G's on this board, if 20 show interest you might get 4 that actually show up.

I may give the Sha-reef a call just to make sure we're not gonna face jail time for a burn ban being in effect. They are pretty hands off but my ex marine neighbor may go shit house and call them in.

a decent backstop is really the only requirement, that and preventing retardisms. As for asians and helicopters.. I think David still has his M60, I got my helmets, and all we need is someone to scream "get some! get some!"

Backstop heights can vary according to the site and use. General dimensions are as follows:
1. Height. A minimum height of 15 feet is acceptable but 20 to 25 feet is recommended. This height is the compacted or settled height. Height should also be consistent with other barriers that may be incorporated into the range design.

A dozer would work best and be the easiest but I also think 15' is major overkill. That is talking about official ranges. The only way that would be necessary in my mind is if people are firing fully auto weapons and do not know how to control them.

a lot of land, but 123 miles east of the metroplex... and wherever we shoot we need to make sure we're okay with all the surroundings.
Sean - I would honestly say a 5' birm would be fine, what's important is how deep it is... or preferrably, if you have a place where we can fire down from a slight elevation.

One idea for target frames are old political yard signs with the wire frame. Tape targets to 'em. Last forever, real cheap, hold target about 2-3' off of ground so your shooting down from a standing/kneeling position. That target height combined with a 7-8' berm and you should be good to go.
And if you plan ahead, you can shoot at your least favorite politician.

Alright, got some pics and I'll see if I can lay this out logically.
This is my existing shooting/burn pile - this is roughly 100 yards from where I took the pic:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k93/Sean88gt/S5030793.jpg
a horrible quality zoomed in pic - the trees beyond that are another 50 yds and I could back it up to there.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k93/Sean88gt/S5030794.jpg
This is from the trees back up (you can see a gate, that is where the first pic was taken) to give an idea of terrain fall.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k93/Sean88gt/S5030795.jpg
This one is shooting cross ways, you can see the yellow target box in the burn pile through the cedar, but that opening to the cedar at the end is 200 yards.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k93/Sean88gt/S5030798.jpg
Shitty zoom in - behind this is a set of heavy trees leading to a creek and about 250 yards beyond that is a hill that goes up - following pics.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k93/Sean88gt/S5030799.jpg
From the other end back across to give an idea of how the terrain lays
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k93/Sean88gt/S5030803.jpg
From a different angle, of the long shot, that house on the hill shows my closest neighbor - maybe 1000 yards or so? And it sits to the side of where I would build the berm.

I bought that grill, had it less than 1 season and the grease pan/grill tops completely rusted out. So now it dies everytime I fire my .22.
I plan to AK the washing machine and maybe throw some of CJ's tannerite in there.

All the fun of Tannerite is watching the shit go off and feeling the shockwave in your chest! When we set off plastic explosive (to clear tree stumps), that's the time to hide behind the truck and cover your ears. You can feel the "whumph" through your feet and it's fkking cool!

I'm going to start working on it tomorrow and see how far I can get.
As far as I know, I have nothing going down later this month/first next month and can work with either a Saturday or Sunday.
I have a tiller, bucket, box blade and straight blade for my tractor, but it is very slow vs. a bobcat/dozer in terms of moving dirt. So I'll get after it tomorrow and see what I can do:)

What sucks is that I had a bulldozer but economy forced me to sell it. I'd have accomplished in 45min what I did today. I'm also trying NOT to destroy my property so a good hour was spent in leveling/cleaning. It would go faster with the tiller but I wanted to make sure all major roots/rocks were cleared out.

I am interested as well. Have a new shotgun and AR that I want to test out. AR needs to be sighted and I just got new optics for my AK that need to be sighted.
How far out will the targets be? I like to sight in at 50 then 100 then 200 if possible.
Also, if it is towards the lunchtime hour (and depending on how many peeps are there) I wouldn't object to bringing in about 6 or so pizzas on my dime.

It's a 1977 Chevy K20 3/4 ton with 4" suspension lift, 33" Swamper Boggers, Detroit locker in rear, 4.10s front/back, 377 Small Block with aluminum Edlebrock heads/cam and a TCI Turbo 350 transmission.
I can go almost anywhere in 2WD with the locker.
I need to buy another cj :( It could go just about anywhere.

I had a 1978 Jeep CJ7 Golden Eagle with the AMC 304 V8 and 3 speed manual transmission.
I had it transported to Gitmo and ended up selling it when I got orders out of there. I don't know if it ever left Cuba.
That damn thing would climb like a mountain goat in 1 Low.

i rember you saying something about it. I think i might have to get another cj ... not a good daily though lol. Maybe ill just get a daily and sell the little white one. I think the next cj i buy is just gonna be a ugly one to build for some serious use offroad. hell i might have to find something like a 85 4 runner or something.
The red 79 was almost unstoppable though, I never really had to get in it to go where i wanted to go. Never got stuck for any other reason other than the front axel shattering.

I wouldn't buy another CJ just because there's no damn room in the thing. I would love to get the Cracker back up and running and get a top for the bed like this:

I would be too afraid of tearing that with a tree branch.

Unless we take fucking boats, it's gonna be a while.
I'm not going until it dries out. I HATE tromping around in the mud. I had enough of that shit in the Corps.
Part of the reason this place is going up for sale in the near future. I hate mud. And we have an abundance of it. Not sure how long the weather is planning on being a monsoon, but I can't do shit until it dries.

I sold it to a collectors museum in dayton, ohio a few years ago, just didn't have time for it anymore. It was my first car.

And nobody should expect you to. The older I get, the less I want to get dirty. I spent my time in the Corps in the field, and I used to love getting in the mud and 4wheeling with my buddies, but those days are gone. Give me the amenities in life and I'm happy.

I couldn't have said it better.
I used to live in the mud. This place would have been heaven when I was 18. I may have churned the road on purpose to have more mud, but now? Fuck this shit.
I'd almost rather check into a hotel for a week after it rains.

I went to Gibson's Outpost yesterday morning, and it was nice and cool. Walking out to put up targets, the field was nothing but mud and standing water. It was great!

I've spent many at time at the river clogging through the mud. That shit just gets everywhere.
I'm tired of cleaning my gear, tired of cleaning my truck, and tired of walking around with 10 lb weights on my feet.
I've had to clean my AR in the dishwasher because it was so friggin nasty.
No thanks.

I love it.
Some pics from my weekend adventure. Nothing like wheeling around in armored vehicles and shooting machine guns. Cant wait until we get my buddies M113 running.

I'm thinking I'm going to head out there.
They open at 10:00 on sunday. I got there about 11:00, and there was only two people there shooting. by 2:30, it was starting to get pretty busy.
I would go this sunday, but taking the CHL class.

I've had other pressing things going on and haven't even given it a second thought. We're trying to get the place ready to sell so all of my attention is focused on that right now.

Yep. I'm tapping out. Apparently a little bit of a drive scares the shit out of prospective employers. Plus I want to get my kids closer to activities they can flourish in. And I'm sitting on a nice equity position that I'd like to cash in on.
