View Full Version : Best long range rifle?

All this talk of long range sniper gear has me wondering, what would be the best real world option (I know a BMG .50 cal would rock my cock, but I'm not willing to drop that much coin right now).
So from a base up build what would be the best rifle, caliber, optics, and all other associated hardware? And post up an idea of cost:)

Rifle (non custom) Remington 700P, Remington Sendero, Savage Model 12
Caliber: .308....for longer range .300 WSM
Optics: Leupold...Zeiss if you really want to spend some money
Cost....You can get a real nice setup for no more than $1500
I agree with the above post, but in my experience, Nightforce optics are top notch. Their new FFP line is superb.
If I had an unlimited budget for an anti-personell rifle, a new Barrett 98B with their BORS system would rule.

As for scope, what power?
It looks like a lot of folks do long range work with 10x, but I'd say go with the level of magnification you're comfortable with, for the distance you plan to shoot at. There are a lot of bullshit myths about long range shooting. I joined snipercentral.com to find out more. Most of what you're asking is FAQ stuff on those forums, but they do have an entry level tac-rifle for $975 for members. That should work great.

There are two trains of thought on magnification. If you get a straight 10x scope, you have to practice on how targets look at different distances.
If you get a variable power scope, you have to figure your magnification into the equation. For instance I have a Mil-Dot scope on the Nikon I have mounted on the varminter AR, and to use the Mil-Dot, you set the maginfication to a marked spot on the ring.
Personally, I like my 3.5-15x Nightforce with the NP1-RR reticle because of the built in range finding.
I really need to brush up on this stuff, I haven't used it in years. I am confident that if I ever had to take a shot up to 600 yards with my PSS, I could take out the target with the first shot.
I'd really like to come out to Tac Pro for a GTG some Saturday. It should be easier in a few weeks after hockey season is over.

a .308 is the best all around caliber for a long range rifle. Cheapest ammo / easiest to find match ammunition. You can get into a decent .308 for around 1000 maybe a little less without optics. I don't personally recommend the .300 WSM, I think it's overrated, too expensive, and just a ploy to get people to get into a new caliber that only gets at best 100fps more than a .300 mag - just get the .300 mag if you want something that big.

Money bags!
Money bags!
You get what you pay for. When mine came in the mail, the booklet inside the triangular box showed a 3.5-15X50 NXS that had an enemy round penetrate the erector tube. Still worked fine except for the mag ring!
:yikes:

You know what I do for a living, and I'm far from "money bags"..... LOL...
I save up and buy nice shit. Like my sniper rig or my new Kimber. I could have bought a lesser 1911, but I wanted the stainless Kimber.
Besides, I get to write all this stuff off on my taxes....

Don't tell anyone, but I've actually debated looking back into law enforcement as a career path. After the monumental stress of owning my own thing for the past 6 years, and stepping down from it, I'm looking for more meaningful work instead of higher pay.
But I know I wouldn't want to start out as a 'beat' cop and work my way up.
Back to the subject at hand, I agree with you, save and buy quality.

The M44 is a later model Mosin Nagant variant. The most common variants are the 91/30 (full size) and the M39 and M44 carbines (the 44 has a permanently affixed bayonet, that's the easiest way to tell them apart)
They're fun!

You'll have to start at the bottom unless you're daddy or brother is brass.
I'm averaging almost $100k/year now when you add overtime and a part time job here and there, so the pay is not chicken feed. Plus the retirement is some of the best you'll get anywhere.
I love going to work and helping people. You never know what you'll get into when you punch in. The variety is why I keep my sanity.

Back to long range rifles, What are your opinions on a Springfield M1A? I'm on the lookout for something that is a semi auto. Bolt actions are fine, but if it came down to multiple targets, a semi imo, is where its at. What is a good price for a M1A?

$1,600-1,700 I would guess...

You can get them for less than that depending on what you want. Prices I am seeing lately for the base M1A is around $1500, the SOCOM IIs are a hair under 2 grand and the Whitefeather M25s are around $3.5K.

And if you're a cheapass, you can get Polytech M1A's for around $850

Ahh... was going off the top of my head. Haven't checked any websites. I would really like a SOCOM, but not gonna drop the $2k.

For me right now, its a toss up between the Rem 700p or the M1A. Was hoping to find one this weekend at the mesquite show. Altho i did find a PSL at the denton show last weekend that was going for 1k with the standard optics.
Thanks for the review David. Just makes the choice that much harder. lol

There was a scoped SAR-8 in the classifieds, if anyone was looking for a semi-auto .308.

I think I am going to buy a SOCOM in the next couple of weeks. I've got to buy some stuff in case the AWB comes back. Thinking about it anyway.

Change the barrel, and do a basic tune up on the action like I'm doing, then step up to a scope with more adjustment, and preferrably change the stock, and you're probably great. I love that round. LMK if you ever want to sell that gun.

Yep, that is why I posted. It is for sale...
Add a Shillen barrel, trigger, bedding, glass and it would be a killer long range rifle.

So you decided to do it? Did you get my texts on that gun?

I did get your texts, but I was on the production floor, so my availability is spotty. I've got the Savage at the gun store, ready to be picked up. I guess I want a .300wsm for the next build. Why not?

.300 wsm bleh, just get a .300 mag and save yourself the headache of the new "improved" round.
