I have St Augustine grass and it hasn't looked too good the last 2 years. I have 30 oak trees and a bunch of bushes in the yard, so I have to be careful of what I put down. Any good qualified recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Maybe hire one of those yearly services if I cant get it goin again.
Thanks,
Wayne

I would hire someone to take care of it. That is what I'm going to do when I move into my new house. I'm too afraid using the wrong stuff and kill the grass.

Its not the grass I'm worried about. Its the trees and bushes.

If you hire anyone that comes out and sprays a bunch of herbicides and fertilizers throughout the year, it'll be doing more harm for all of the plant material than doing nothing at all.
With that many trees it may take some thinning of them to get more light to the grass as a start.

I wouldn't over do it. They still need plenty their leaves to make food.

Wayne, how do you mow? Do you mulch, bag, discharge....? If you mulch, you should aerate it at least once a year in the spring. ASFA the tree's go, I can give you a referral if you want the best lookin trees around. LMK

Mulch usually. Never aerated it before.

I would definately try the aerating of the grass. Another question is how often do you change the pattern in which you mow? Try to change that up every so often, and another question is how high do you leave the grass? St. Augustine is a broad leaf grass, I can't think of the appropriate height right now, but I would definately cut it around 1 1/2 to 2 inches.

if you have really sandy soil no need to aerate, if clay then yes, in extrememly shady conditions leave the st. pretty tall, st. augustine needs 4-6 hrs of direct sunlight for optimum growth, it tolerates shade fairly well but still likes the sun.
and keep on a regular fert. and weed program that is extremely important.
one of the best things to do is a soil sample and get it checked to see exactly what your lawn as well as trees are missing in the ground.

Where do I take the soil sample?

That's too low for St. Augustine.

contact your local extension service and they can direct you, if you have a lesco/john deere service center (fert. service not the tractor place), they can give you the sample bag and then mail it for you.
