ANNA’S HOUSE
Here’s a chance to get involved in a worthwhile cause…..
Our family has been volunteering at a women’s shelter in Garland called Anna’s House that provides transitional housing and services for women.
This is a wonderful program run by a lady named Eva Miles....the house actually belonged to Eva and her husband and they raised their family there before donating it as a shelter. I figured if Eva can move out of her own home so those without a home have a place to live, then the least we can do is offer our time to help fix it up. Anna’s House just celebrated its 1 year anniversary last week and has served about 30 women since its inception. The Discovery Channel is currently filming a documentary about Anna’s House which will air sometime in the next few months.
For whatever reason, I've been called to share my construction experience and organizational skills for Anna's House. Eva and the ladies currently living in the house are so incredibly appreciative of even the smallest things and it's a joy to be able to give back since my own family has been so blessed.
The house itself is 31 years old so you can imagine some of the maintenance, repairs and small remodeling or redecorating projects that need to be done. Being a non-profit organization, there's very limited funds for needed repairs so I'm contacting family, friends and co-workers to see if they have any building materials, appliances, light fixtures, etc. left over from their own home remodeling or repair projects or excess materials from construction jobs.
This is a great opportunity to do a little pre-Spring cleaning and clear out your garage or storage shed! Jerry and I have a truck so we’re more than willing to pick up anything you’re able to donate. Anna’s House is a non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible. Once we round up enough supplies and materials, we’ll schedule a volunteer work day – goal is March or April) so I’ll keep you posted if you’d like to help out.
Here’s a list of some of the items needed….the ones marked with an “ * “ are the most time critical:
