View Full Version : Scorch/start over the lawn
Anyone just ready to throw in the towel and just start over with the yard? What's the best course of action to just burn all the lawn (grass or whats left of included) and weeds and just put new seed down?
Is there anything I can put down that will KILL everything and then I can just reseed and water heavy later this summer?
an herbicide will work fine...they will stay in the soil a while though. Better get it down now so it will grow mid spring.

At our old house I got a 2 1/2 gallon pump sprayer and a gallon of Roundup concentrate, sprayed the entire back yard and within a week it was dead as dead could be. Raked it by hand to pull most of it up, bagged it, then rented a tiller from Home Depot, tilled it and layed out several pallets of sod. It was a lot of work, but made a huge difference. When I started, the yard had 3 seperate elevations, seperated by cement and railroad ties. I leveled it out as best I could by hand before sodding it.
Maybe do 100 feet out from the back of the house or so, nice area to have a back yard patio with tables and chairs, etc.
the front yard is f'n huge and worse off then the back.

I haven;t seen your yard, but it would be worth the effort. Hell, get some beer, pizza and a few friends and you could knock it out easy in a day. HD has some big tillers that can tackle the job! If you need to borow the pump sprayer, let me know and I can take it to work. Fill it with water, a little Round Up, pump it up and spray the yard, that is easy to do.
Do you have a tractor mower? If so, you could get the attachment to scalp the yard afterwards, then bag all the dead shit up.

Good gawd, is there even a single blade of grass in all those weeds? Kill that shit now, then in a couple weeks till it and sod it. I'm telling ya' 2 or even 3 friends and it can get tilled/sodded in a day easy.
So any recommendations on what to kill it with lol.

Round Up and a 2 1/2 gallon sprayer. You can plant after 21 days or something like that.
Edit: Round Up in the concentrated form, then you mix it with water in the sprayer.

Might want to mix a little liquid bug killer in it at the same time, in case their are grub worms and shit in the dirt. Get some of that Triacizide or whatever it's called. Or after you have killed it all, get a rotary spreader and spread some of the granules out. I would use some type of bug killer at least a week before sodding.
Gasoline and a match, it worked in the Fastest Indian.

Stay out of my back yard. lol My dog is even the exact same. =) To till up mine, i built a go kart from scratch, and have been making a track. After a couple dozen passes, its ready to sod.

I'd rent a sod cutter, it'll let you roll up your old grass/weeds like carpet and then you can level it out and add whatever you need.

That's a ton of work to get rid of though, unless he has a dump truck to unload it all, or one of those rent-a-dumpsters.

I know you have already put out a pre-emergant, but what I think you should do is scalp the ground cover down to about an inch and instead of roundup I would use a broad leaf grass killer, MSMA is a good one, which also works for clovers, dallas grass, fox tail, and the many other types of weeds that you have growing in your yard. I think you should then hire me to do an irrigation install so that you can actually water your grass evenly and more frequently, which will help strengthen your grass and keep the weeds from popping up. This is going to have to be something that you are going to have to be comitted to do. Its not going to be something you can expect to take care of itself. After all of this I say you work in sections of the lawn so you don't get burned out. Maybe half the front lawn, then the other half, then moving on to the back. Also since you have it scalped, you could get some fill dirt and fill in any unlevel ground you might have. Lots of work, blood and tears.

another thing I think we should do is mow your lawn more often. I am thinking 2 a week right now. Maybe more later.

By the time we get done lifting there is no sunlight left...so that's out of the question.

Lunch Break, my mind is going a mile a minute right now. Even started studying my old Finance material. Been thinking about your yard problem and thinking about my work
So have you done anything yet?
Scalped the yard and put down some roundup...don't know if it killed it or it's just dead grass still, waiting a few more days going to rake up the 2 sections I did and see what I have left.

Did you scalp, then apply roundup afterwards? If so, you did it backwards! Leaves help it get into the weed/grass. But it should die off within a week after application for sure, if it was mixed right and didn't rain after it was applied for several hours.

Didn't rain for at least 48 hours.

you need to look up the label for msma, it is mainly used for grassy weeds, although it has some broadleaf activity its not much and it is still way to cool to use. and roundup is going to have a hard time killing dormant bermuda, and reseading now is just going to be a waste of time and money, its still way to early to germinate bermuda seed.

Correct. MSMA is for higher temps and for grassy weeds. It's pointless to use right now. I sprayed RoundUp in both parts of my front yard like 2 weeks ago. It took about 4-5 days to really show signs of killing the few weeds I had. Now, they're all dead, and I'll be ready when the bermuda gets going.
As stated above, it's way to early to be tossing out bermuda seed. If you want to know when to do it, just watch your local golf courses. When you see them aerating and top dressing, I'd follow suit.

looks liek you have burmuda under all of that ? if so, just scalp it -the large purple flowered weeds are only cold wether weeds, the sun/heat will kill those off. if you scalp it, those weeds will more than likly not even come back. then put down a good layer of Turf Builder with weed control, the burmuda will grow thick enough to choke out most weeds.

That worked for us last year until july/aug... we kept the "lawn" mowed and it looked great, nice anc green. Then as the summer wore on, the weeds died and half the yard was dead and quite sad looking.

I was gonna tell ya that's an extreme step and consider other options but after seeing that weed pile you call a yard - do what ya gotta do. :saroll:
