My parents are looking to buy a new washer and dryer and they just dont know what brand to go for. I started doing some research and it seems that each brand has its ups and downs. I have read more reviews on the Samsungs and LG's than other brands...then again, there is more good and bad about both brands.

LG -
good: very efficient, priced decent, 1200rpm spin cycle
bad: mildew smell from bad draining, some people the efficiency doesnt clean the clothes

Samsung -
good: price..especially since it comes with the drawers, cleans clothes well
bad: have to leave door open to air dry after using, the detergent starts draining as soon as you put it in

Electrolux - not a lot of reviews

GE - not a lot of reviews

So what do you have and do you like it?

We do... I cant remember what they are though. I got a killer deal on them after we moved into the house. They were on CL, a famiy had moved into a house that included them in the package, they were brand new, just like the house... but they had their own.
I know, I am totally not helpful. Plus, nothing else about our place is efficient so I am sure how much they help!

Most of the front loading washing machines will need to have the front door left open from what I've heard/read. Just the way the tank lies inside it can't drain all the water. We have a Kenmore and it works great.

A conventional top loader will eventually develop the mildew smell if the lid is not left open, so I don't see that as a serious issue.

Bosch makes excellent washers, they may not have a well known name but worth a look. I love mine.

we have a set of, "brand new in May 08", (He) washer and dryer. They are the whirlpool duet with steam. The only problem we have had with them was that when we first pluged them in the washer had a bad electronic board in it. It would come on and weight the clothes but wouldn't start the cycles. they replaced it and haven't had a problem since. I'm sure that there was a bad sodder on the board somewhere.

I've got the Samsung set, and other than the dryer issue that I documented in the other thread I love them. Haven't had a single issue now that they replaced the dryer, and that could have been fixed on the first visit by the repair man if he had done his job right from the start.

I just leave the door open a crack after I finish the last load and haven't had a problem with the smell.

We have 2 Kenmore front loaders. Do a good job, but the motherboard on the washer went out a week after the warranty was up. That cost 3 bills to have fixed. Think we paid around 2 grand for them 2 years ago. No other issues with them though, both Energy Star, and both fairly quiet.

Damn, your repair cost what my whole washer did & it's held up for 8 years so far.

Bah, talk to the wife about it. The last one we had was a piece of junk and was tearing up her clothes so we splurged.

I have a set of Samsung that are about 6 months old. I have had no problems with them. I didn't think that I would like a washer/dryer, but I actually love these. I have never had a mildew smell on the washer and I never leave the door open or even cracked. Plus, the drawer stands came free with the purchase. With that and with Best Buy matching Lowes 10% off sale, I ended up saving over $500.

We just bought the Samsung front loader washer and dryer, both with steam function. Very efficient and the washer barely use's any water and has a SUPER fast spin cycle so the clothes come out almost dry.

Dryer has a sensor in it that detects when the clothes are actually dry vs the time on the panel, eg; set for normal, timer says 35 minutes to dry, then 7 minutes later it chimes that it is finished and all the clothes are dry.

Bought both from Lowe's for $2,100 delivered with bottom drawer base.

That is the same set that I have. Also has some sort of silver ion setting that uses very cold water to deep clean or something. I just use the regular cycles. And like you said, the dryer senses when clothes are dry and rarely takes as long as it says it will.

the whirlpool ones that we have do the same thing with the super fast spin cycle. We have found that if you have alot of towels or blankets in it that sometimes it doesn't drain very well on the spin cycle. It has only happend a few times and every time has had a metric shit ton of big items in it. You got a better deal on yours then I did also however we bought the extended warranty plans and both stands, one of which was free.

I have about a year old Frigidaire Affinity (I believe this is electrolux) we love them. same thing about the clothes almost being dry out of the washer. I only usually dry about half of them. It was definitely a great upgrade. I feel like the water consumption is cut in half and I'm sure even more of the electricity with such a short drying cycle.

We have a set of Whirlpool Duets. they are at least 3 years old, so surely there have been advancements made since then. They are extremely quiet and easy to use, but the washer does seem to hold water under the rubber ring that seals the door shut. If you don't clean it out periodically (and doing so is pretty gross), it starts to stink. For some odd reason, it leaves my dark towels with a rubbery smell too. I solved that problem by just buying a bunch of nice white towels and bleaching them and using hot water every time.

I wish I had stands for these because they are low to the ground and loading/unlodaing requires some serious bending for a tall guy like me.

We have an old dryer, but we have the Bosch HE washer. I dont know much about it but my wife loves it. I do know that the dry times have been cut in half. The damn things spins so fast it almost drys the clothes before they go into the dryer. Kinda sounds like a supercharger too, that is why I agreed to it.:)

We picked up the Whirlpool Cabrio series washer and dryer from Lowes a while back. The washer is a top load HE with a see through glass. The dryer also has a see through glass on it, and it also is a steam dryer. I can put clothes in it that are wrinkly and select the steam setting, and it tumbles it with steam. All in all, they've been working like a champs!

We've got the 1st generation Maytag Neptune front loaders. I guess these started the whole HE front loader thing in washers and dryers.

I got them back in 2001. We had an electrical component fail at year 5 but it was replaced under warranty within 24 hours. Other than that, we've had no issues at all.

The damn things simply work. They clean just about anything. They can take HUGE friggin loads. We've got a huge couch with a slip cover. It can handle the slip cover, the pillow covers, and the cushion cover in one load.

We bought ours at Kellum and Sons. They were closeout displays.

The wife keeps saying that she wants to get some Kenmore's or something that is stackable (our laundry room is too damn small). BUT she wants to wait until these units fail again. I think she's got a long wait on her hands.. (fingers crossed)
