Hell i'm not taking a date... just going out for some fun with some other folks from the board.
Congrats on the CHL step, I do still need to get mine as well, if I don't have it by then maybe we can party up. Come on out if you want to get more familiar with the firearms.
I'll have me .40 XD and a 12g shotgun out there that you can try out.:naughty:

I think the range is going to be packed on Valentines day. Everytime I think I've outsmarted the masses I pull into that parking lot and there are trucks stacked up to the street. I hate shooting when I'm arm to arm with someone.

It all depends on who is running the range. I've shot FMJ there a few times when I had the younger range officer, the older assclown gets all over you like a nazi, wants to see through all of your bags, etc. Last time he did that I just said fuck it and started packing my shit up and went to the counter and asked for a refund.
The difference is one has a complete copper jacket around the rifle round, and the other has a lead tip, it's opened. They're concerned about over penetration (they say). The real reason is most people can only find FMJ for their rifles, so they're forced to buy soft point rounds from their gun store, in which they overcharge a fortune to make more money. FMJ's are considerably cheaper than SP in many circumstances.

I see... so ya'll are more focused on this being rifles than pistols, FMJ wise. I haven't shot at the rifle area yet so i'm not sure how it's monitored. Last time we went early in the morning as well and we had no range officer, we had to call hot and cold ourselves.
Sounds like the rifle area is a bit more monitored. Also sounds like it would be hard to hide since they can visibly see the copper jackets on the table/ground after firing. I was thinking it would be as easy as putting them into a SP box, but i guess not.

There wouldnt be a copper jacket on the ground or table. That shit goes down range.
Think of a standard army bullet vs a hunting round.

they make you open it up to look at it. I had some AP rounds silver tipped and the idiot though they were SP, if he was worried about FMJ, he should really be worried about AP.
The pistol range is not monitored normally, you can shoot just about anything on the pistol range, they don't care. Most of my guns are rifles, and that's what I like to shoot at the range. I have an automatic Thompson at Alpine on the pistol range last year and after a couple bursts they asked me to leave. So just don't rapid fire.
One of the reasons I really like the winchester gallery is they don't really give a shit about what you do and how fast you pull the trigger. They've never given me any shit about automatics there. I prefer indoor ranges for pistols, outdoor ranges for rifles.
