It's time. I want to ditch the cheezy fiberglass simulated wood front door and get a real solid wood door. I noticed that Home Depot and Lowes can order them. Seems like they go for $800 and up (waaaaay up). Is there another way to go to get it cheaper?

I got a nice solid fir door from Home Depot for $300+tax. Its a panel door with 4 windows across the top. Point is, not all their special order doors were $800+...

Yep or Seconds and Surplus. I got our new door there for just about nothing and love it. They have a decent inventory to choose from at just about any price point. Its worth taking a look.

Be aware that over time, wooden doors will crack due to expansion and shrinkage. Everyone loves a new wooden door until it requires maintenance, and it will after a year or so, especially if you face west. That's the main reason I've gone to fiberglass and/or metal doors. I have installed some gorgeous $3000 doors (oak and mahogany)on houses that looked like hammered shit after 2 years. They're easy to refurbish, but they do require attention.
