Andruw Jones close to signing with Rangers
By Tim Brown, Yahoo! Sports
Released last month by the Los Angeles Dodgers, outfielder Andruw Jones appears headed for a minor-league contract with the Texas Rangers, according to baseball sources.
Jones, who will be 32 in April, is attempting to revive his career after a disastrous season in Los Angeles. He reportedly turned down an invitation from the Yankees to attend spring training as a non-roster player, but sees opportunity in Texas.
Rangers president Nolan Ryan has said Josh Hamilton should move from center field to right field, where his body would not take the beating it did late last season, when he admittedly wore down. If Jones were to become fitter and regain his batting stroke, he could provide relief to Hamilton. Though, based on the results from his last season-and-a-half, Jones has a long way to go to become a productive big-league hitter again.
As a way out of town, Jones agreed to defer much of the $21.1 million he is still owed by the Dodgers, or what was left of the two-year, $32-million contract signed last winter.

LOL. Is it bad when you hope some potential signing will be as good as Milton Bradley? Didn't think so. The Rangers should go after Ben Sheets.
You mean the same Ben Sheets that will be out 'til mid-season due to surgery?
If the Rangers sign either one I'll no longer acknowledge that they still exist.

Yeah, why not. Hell they are used to their pitchers only being availiable for 1/2 a season anyway. At least you're getting an All-Star for well below market value.

The Rangers tried and the Dodgers outbid them:)
Oh yeah, they just signed Brendan Donnelly. Giving them three former all star relievers. The bullpen shouldn't be a problem this season.
It's a done deal

I'll take a 10 time gold winner in center that's capable of 40+ home runs and 120+ rbis.
Oh yeah, the most he can make from Texas is $1.5 million. The Dodgers still owe him $22.1 million.

The key is "former all star relievers"..."former" being the main adjective.

as long as jones can hit north of the mendoza line he'll be a help to the line up, and it will get hamilton out of center where his speed made him a liability. i think jones is at a point in his career where pride comes into play and he wants to prove that he can still stick it.

I really like the signing of adruw jones by texas, hes a former all-star who plays great defense. Last year he struggled at the plate, and was extremely overweight, but if anybody can fix his swing it's rudy jaramillo, that's for damn sure:veryhappy:

Great! That's all we need another swing for the fences guy. Hey atleast he'll bring in people to watch so the Rangers don't go broke!

For the Ranger's sake, I hope Andruw has gotten over his ego. From what I've read, when he lost his swing in Atlanta he refused to listen to his hitting coaches that were telling him what he was doing wrong.
If he gets his swing back he'll be an asset, if not then at least the Rangers don't have a lot of money tied up in him.

I'll take a former all star over an un tested rookie or useless veteran any day of the week.
Give the Rangers some credit, they have put together a decent team without breaking the bank.
The only team that kept them out of the playoffs last year lost Mark Teixeira and their superstar player (Guerrero) is finally starting to show his age. Their other two over priced stars (GMJ and Torii Hunter) haven't done anything to earn their money yet.

You're drinking the Hicks kool-aid my friend. They were under .500 last year (as I predicted), and Hamilton tanked the second half of the season (as I also predicted). Texas has had several "former all-star" pitchers, and that "former" part always bites them in the arse. Highest ERA in the league, most runs allowed, and most errors in the league won't be cured with"former" all-star pitchers...But you guys keep going out there and buying that $8 beer and $5 hot dogs so that Hicks can keep putting "has-beens" and "never-will-be's" out there to watch.

The errors don't really bother me. Mind you I am a strong advocate that errors and walks equal runs; when you're in last place in percentage and only .008 behind first its no big deal.
They are signing the pitchers to bring the ERA down, a lot of the ERA problems were in the later innings of the game. A blown lead in the 4th-9th inning was almost clockwork at one point or another in each game this year.
Maybe I'm on the bandwagon too, but even though the deal with Sheets fell through I still think they're moving in the right direction. Putting Frank Francisco in the closer roll is a great, and overdue move too.
The Rangers have the #1 rated farm system as ranked by Baseball America and I think come mid year we'll see some quality call ups, not to mention shipping some youth out to bring in some veteran pieces (I'm almost 95% sure they'll bring in a vet behind the dish to help the catchers along).
Annnddd, I can't wait to finally see what Elvis Andrus (MLB.com #21 prospect) can do at short, I feel like I have been hearing about him forever.

The Ranger's farm system has had phenomenal talent from way back...Pudge, Juan, Palmer, etc. all came from within. The issue (since the '90's) is what happens once they get to the bigs? Just like them pushing an unproven short-stop up, and moving a veteran to third. Shades of Benji Gil, I'm telling you!

Its just weird to think that Mike started at second, moved to short, and now that he is older is playing third. He was pretty upset about being pushed over but I think it will work out.
If we can pull out 85 wins this year it will be a major success, and I think that is doable.

If they get to 85 wins, I would consider it a pretty good year, too.

$4.25 beers thank you. Jerry Jones hasn't reviewed their pricing strategy yet!
They finished sub .500 last year but the Angels are the only other team in their division worth a damn and they got considerably weaker in the off season. 15-20 games worse I'm not sure but if Texas can win 10 more games this year they'll have a legit shot at the playoffs. Take Tampa or Boston out of the mix and they were 10 games out of the hunt for a wild card last season.

Dude, you guys obviously haven't seen Jones play much the last couple years. His speed is GONE, he can't cover ground at all. There was a report done a couple years ago about the number of 'catchable' balls that he wasn't able to get. It got painful watching him here, I'm glad he's gone.

He got fat and still got an 18 million dollar contract. Now that he signed for 1.5 I think it will be an eye opener. There's still a good chance that it will he his last hoorah, but I like the sign. Let's see if he's willing to do the work.
And as long as I can keep bringing my own cooler I'll keep going. Vodka lemonade in a Gatorade container works for me.

And looking at the market Jim Edmonds is the only other listed center fielder free agent still available, pick your poison.

Jones reported to camp and estimated he lost about 20 pounds of fat in the off season, take that for what its worth.
