Depends on how large your yard is. Incandescent floods for small or standard size yards and quartz floods for larger yards.

I got one of those halogen motion sensor lights over my driveway. Costs like $50 at Home Depot and lights up the area pretty well. They have several different types, some light up more than others.
At my old house I had a halogen flood light on the (loks liek a mini version that lights up a tennis court) and that fucker could give you a sunburn! It lit up a huge area.
Here's the flood light I had, or at least it looked liek this one.

That first one looks like a good one I could use in the backyard. Only problem is I think it attracts a lot of bugs right?

Look through some of these. Rab makes great fixtures.

I did the same; mounted it on the brick over the driveway. Ran romex to a plug in inside the garage, so no wiring required.

Not really, the light only turns on when it senses movement, and turns off like 2,5,X minutes later - depending on what you set it too. I think there are 3 time settings.
Damnit, first one I posted in the one that stays on all the time. Yeah, it did attract bugs. I did also have a bug zapper in the back yard, so it took care of a lot f them!
On a related note, when I moved into my place, the motion-detector on the floodlamp to the driveway worked fine. Now it doesn't. It's mounted to the brick outside (from what I remember) and there's a switch in the garage and a switch inside my hallway that can turn it off and on. I can physically switch the light off and on, but don't know why the motion sensor is all wiggin' out.

I personally would go witha good set of landscaping lights that come with or you can add on some of the little spotlights.

The motion detectors they make these days are total crap, which is what you are dealing with GE. Get a replacement at Depot.
You can get a stand alone for the light Rob posted that stays on all the time so that is an issue easily fixable. I've got two of the double bulb fixtures about 30' apart, both motion activated with the "dusk to dawn" feature that work quite well. The lights are on low output (pretty dim but still putting out) until the motion is triggered.
Figured out the mounting locations well enough that they don't interfere with the security cameras. It's nice being able to read plates in the dark...

Brinks lets their name be sold at walmart, the ones on sensors are like 13$, w/o bulbs, you will spend almost that much on bulbs, I recently lit up my house adding 3 floods at various locations of my house, they do the trick. the only problem is when my wife pulls in she gets blinded. but I like that part of the flood and entry to my drive.
