I'm looking at going to a tankless water heater to get some floor space in my garage. Anyone have any experience with installing them? I need an electric one, as there is no NG here at the house.
If you're a plumber/electrician and can install one, please PM me for a quote. Willing to trade work out for a professional business website if you need one.

I hear electric ones are not efficient enough to save any money, and can't provide enough hot water at times.
Do you have an attic? Throw some plywood down up there and store stuff that is not frequently used. Have any shelves up on the walls? You won;t gain that much space by getting rid of a water heater (or hot water heater as some like to call it!)

I need my drill press to go where the water heater is right now. I'm having the floors epoxied this week and would like for the water heater to be non-existent. The decking is already down in the attic and its full.

No doubt. Right now i've got so much into this one that i'm just going to stay here. the TWH is not a HUGE thing, but I was just hoping that I could get it out of the way. Just one more thing. Bout to move my 60gallon air compressor outside. I saw that Rinnai sells external tankless water heaters and I was going to do that. I went to Lowes today to look and all they had were smaller internal Bosch TWHs and the guy said, its not the price of the water heater, he said he's heard quotes of $1500 to have them installed. If thats the case, i'll stay with my conventional water heater without a 2nd thought. I dont see how hard it would be to hook up the water and hook a power source. It's with in inches from the fuse block as well.

installing those aren't so cut and dry as just being close to the fuse box. Those electric ones take a lot of juice. Could push the amp draw on your panel over the 80% mark of its rating, so you would have to replace that, as well as get a new circuit run for the water heater. Those electric ones are crap by the way. If you decide to put one in, better plan on putting in a second one in the future when you get tired of not having enough hot water. Personally, I think tankless water heaters are snake oil and with the energy savings you get, the payback period is way to long to make it worth while.

I was looking at some a while back, and they had like 3 different grades available (gas models) for how many things would need hot water at the same time. The standard could supply hot water to 1 thing, a dish washer, washing machine or bathtub/shower. Try to use two things at the same time, and you would not get enough hot water, so you upgrade to the next bigger model, which costs more, and uses more gas to heat the water.

I am moving my hot water heater to the attic to make space.
The attic is the last place that I would move a water heater to. When that SOB springs a leak, I don't want it over my head. I don't care how many drain pans you have under it.

Right on. I had a homeowner insist on 2 of those electric bad boys...not good. Each of his took an 80 amp dedicated circuit. When both of those bitches are running, his meter spins like the Griswalds' from "Christmas Vacation". The newer conventional electric water heaters are not that bad. Very inexpensive, easy to change out, and pretty efficient.

I don't know for sure, but I tend to agree with this statement. My reading/research indicated that I'd likely be f'ed with one while trying to shower/do laundry and stuff. Also, not real reason to believe it'll save that much money of time.
I'd rather stick with my gas/tank heater and know it'll be good. Why not just relocate the one in the garage somewhere?

electric tankless are teh suck, if you need it out of the garage and want it relocated into the attic give me a call 214-321-1811. also for the guy that said he would never move one to the attic, most new homes ( 2 story ) have one or more in the attic

mines in the attic; that's why I replace it about every 9 years or so.
I've heard that the electric tankless water heaters are crap due to the amount of juice they pull and the limited amount of heat they put in the water. Gas is the way to go. BUT, once you figure in installation costs you won't save enough money to make the investment worthwhile.
