View Full Version : Losing some weight

For the past 2 weeks I've been able to shed a little over 10 lbs. I figure that if I can do this, anybody can. Disclaimer, I'm no professional, check with a doctor before doing anything.
I'm 26, 5' 6" with starting weight at 184 and I'm now at 170.
My goal is 145 by the first of Summer.
Here's what I've been up to-
Diet- I've been really looking at calories, aiming for no more than 400 a meal with more at breakfast than for dinner. This means smaller portions and/or lighter choices.
Having a sandwich- Instead of eating both top and bottom buns, toss the top bun away before you begin. There goes 50-70 calories.
Calories and eating are a lot like earning and spending. If you spend more than you make, you go in debt. Likewise with eating, if you are taking in more calories than you are burning, you will gain weight. Simple, right?
A fun treat- put banana slices from a whole banana in the freezer until frozen, add these in blender with cup of fat free milk and teaspoon of cocoa powder for a healthier chocolate shake.
Habits- I have not been eating anything after 6 pm, no more late night snacks :banghead:. If I must eat something, I'll eat yogurt or a banana.
Splurging-
I'm a huge Mt. Dew fan. I used to drink up to 3 a day. I allow myself only 1 Mt. Dew a day at lunch.
Fast food places usually have low calorie options. Do some research and you can find some filling items that have only 200-300 calories.
Supplements- I've only been taking a daily weight control multivitamin like Centrum. Nothing exotic or expensive.
Exercise- I had bought the P90X workout DVDs a while back. While the program is great, I could not invest an hour and a half each day towards the workouts, plus, I am not too concerned with bulking up as I have a stocky frame as it is.
There are some good cardio DVDs in the P90X program such as Cardio X, KenPo X, Core Synergistics, and Ab RipperX. These are sometimes sold seperately on eBay.
I've been doing 30-40 minutes of cardio each day with the above videos.
Jogging/running- I found a park nearby with a paved jogging path. I run two laps and time myself each time. I find it a bit addictive to try and beat your previous times. I've been doing this about 4-5 times a week right after work, taking only about 25 minutes.
That's it, when I hit my goal I will post before/after pictures. :umbrella:

Sounds like a good start. You should really try to get off the Dew though. Just like throwing away that top bun if you were to cut out Dew completely you'd see better results. If you need the caffeine then try some strawberry or ice tea Crystal Light. I understand how addictive they are. If you can, try to limit your soft drink intake to once a week. If you don't it's possible to hit a plateau fairly quickly. Not snacking in the evening is also a great strategy.
Good luck!

I'm now at 165lbs.
I'm a bit concerned that I'm loosing weight too fast.
17-19 lbs in 23 days.
I'm not starving myself, I just think my original diet/activity was just that unhealthy.

Sounds like you're doing really well. I'm curious to see if the next 20 lbs will be as easy as the first. Keep up the good work!

10:30-12:00.
I'll drink water and sometimes have a banana chocolate shake as mentioned above. I've been eating dinner at about 5:30pm.

i wish i could eat that early, i don't get off work 'til 5:30, get home and start working out around 6. By the time i eat it's usually around 7:30 and that's if i go right home after work. If not, hell it was a little after 8 the other night when i finally ate.

I've lost 50 pounds since August of 2008. I really got into cycling and eating really healthy. I went from 185 to 135 and have never felt better in my life. I am 36 and I now weigh what I did when I graduated highshcool. I eat 5 to 6 meals a day and feel awesome. I no longer snore when I sleep and I don't have massive back pain when I wake up in the morning. If anyones interested I can share my diet and exercise habits.

Are you a female? How tall are you? 135 at normal height for a guy is well...unhealthy i would think.

I'm only 5'8" and I have a very small frame. I am in perfect health. My blood pressure is usually 110 over 65 and my pulse at rest is usually between 45 and 50. My protein and iron levels checked great at my yearly physical and my cholsterol was way down from last year.

We are the same height and i can tell you 135 is skinny. Shit im 145-150 now and i consider myself skinny. Granted, i have a bit more muscle im still skinny.

I don't know what to say. I eat 5 or 6 times a day and I am definitely not starving myself. I have continued on the same exercise plan for the last 3 months and have stopped losing weight and have pretty much stayed at this weight for the last month. I feel great!!!!

Tommy - Girls, yes. Guys, not so much.
rednready - Im confused now. Are you male or female? If youre male i wish i had pictures when i was 135 at 5'9". IMO, its way to skinny.... To each their own.

How many calories are you at a day ?
you are losing weight hella fast.
I'm 5 6" and i weigh 173 right now , lost about 5 pnds in a couple weeks (just getting started)
I 've done this several times though and I would only lose weight that fast if I got below 1500 calories a day, which is like starving yourself to death.
I'm tying to lose weight over 6 months, down to 150 or so, but with muscle again...
I'm just saying 20 pounds in 3 weeks ! are you crazy... take it slower man!

Congrats man! I too am losing weight pretty fast. I got scared after stepping on the scale in mid november and pushed 255.6lbs...and was like HTF did that happen?
My cousin lost a ton of weight, 310 down to 185 and looks great. I followed a modified version of his diet with no working out so far and have dropped down to 226, but have been hovering there for about 3 weeks now. Co-workers have said I look a lot different especially in my cheeks and gut. I also feel a lot better not carrying around that 30lbs of dead weight all the time.
I cut out cokes and sugar over a year ago, no caffiene and eat less than 1500 calories a day. The problem was carbs. cutting those out started cutting lbs VERY fast.
I think I am hovering at my weight right now because I have been slowly bringing carbs back in little by little as a test to see what happens. I am going hard core again and trying to get down to 205 by May. Might start working out again but I don't want any more muscle, but a large framed guy at 6-0", 205 seems about right at 34 y.o....?

I've been doing this since August. 50 lbs divided by six months = 8.33 pounds a month. What's wrong with that? That's 2 pounds a week.

The first pic is from March '08 but I was at the same weight (182 lbs or so) at the end of December '08. I have slowed down my weight loss a bit due to a minor waffle addiction :nono: but am adjusting and hitting it hard to get to the 145 goal in the next month or 2. (same pants in both pics)
