I know this comes up once a week but I am looking for some suggestions on shotguns for two women for home defense and to be armory fillers for the hive. :fing02: The two of them are not weak or wimps, both strong and athletic, hell the wife shoots the .300wsm with out wincing but am thinking calibers less then 12ga.
The women are short 5'3" and 5'5" so I have been thinking about the youth version in 500.
Q. Is the youth receiver and tube the same as the standard 500 model from Mossberg?
Q. For a strictly home and personal defense gun, would 20ga (buckshot or defensive shotshell) be sufficient? What is the forum consenses
Q. Would a .410 be efficient for the same purpose?
Mossberg has a pistol grip, 18" barrell .410 that would be a handy corner turner and quick come up guns for inside a house. Less aim compared to the half dozen ARs half dozen pistols so a quicker shot could be taken. No way could I do the 12ga in the same setup for them, way to much for men to handle effectivley in my opinion.
Opinion wanted.

For HD, stay away from the .410. It really is a tiny little shell and can't offer much penetration/damage. 20 ga. is not a bad compromise, but even 12 ga. isn't too much for many women to handle.

Definitely count the .410 out for home defense. 20 gauge maybe but if you have a 12 gauge now I would suggest buying a box or two of low recoil defense rounds and see how the women react to it first before spending money on the 20 gauge.

I had totally forgot about the low recoil option.

Here is the 870 7rd Express in 18" that I am looking at
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q313/robertbarton76015/870expsynthetic12ga-20ga.jpg
Similar gun but in a digi camo package and I am finding a better deal on them

Or the Mossy 500 in 12ga 9rd 18 1/2" barrel

If it were I'd go with the 870. I hear it's got the best action (and that's not a biased opinion, I own a Winchester Defender 1300) and there are certainly more accessories available for them compared to the Mossberg and especially the Winchester. The digital camo version looks interesting but it's hard to tell by the picture.

I think for quality's sake I would rather the 870, you are right. If I went with any accessories it would be maybe a saddle shell holder and a light. I have a 500 Mossberg that was my first shotgun and is 18yrs old still a good gun of course. But not as smooth an action as an 870.
here is an ad from Gunbroker for reference. I can not find it anywhere on Remington’s site, not a good thing when I would like to order 4 of them at once. Looks like I will have to deal with 4 different stores, tracking numbers and prices, but they are priced pretty good.
Link has some good pics. Worst case is that the furniture gets a matte black paint job.

Academy used to only get 329-349 for the black defense model and gets them in pretty regularly. They also sell the 870 defense in 20 ga. for the same price.
I bought my 870 18in Synthetic Express for $309+tax. If you're concerned about length of pull on those of smaller stature, there's a pistol grip and 6-position stock (think M4) conversion available a lot of places. Wilson Combat has one that isn't too high, but look around. There's bound to be someone cheaper than them with the same shit.

Thanks. Now to find if they can get 4 of them to one store with a credit card number.
You are refering to this one right?

Wasn't there someone on the board that works(ed) at Academy at the gun counter?

I bought an ATI stock on combathunting for pretty cheap. They sure do blow at getting the item to the shipper though.

Like stated, Id get the 12 gauge with the low recoil rounds. As far as shotguns, I havent shot any others, but I so far love my 870.

Recoil of a 12GA is a heck of alot less than a .300 WSM. I wouldn't get anything with a pistol grip though. A youth 20GA would be perfect IMO.

Academy can't order anything or transfer firearms corporate policy, but its how they keep their prices down.
However, you can call your local store and they can locate 4 of them around the area at the other stores that you could pick-up

Whatever. Did yours go on a fishing trip or something? :23::tapedshut:
You probably have one of each plus the 40mm converted to shoot the 12ga shells also.

Haha, no kidding, I seriously don't own a shotgun, only rifles and handguns. Looking to pickup a defender short barrel whenever the opportunity arrives.

What??? I thought you had one of everything.:09:
X 100 on the 12 gauge with 7 1/2's or 8's.
Allot of times the recoil is in the gun too. I have a Winchester Super X2 that shoots # 4's like most shoot 8's. Great hunting and competition rifle, but too long for home defense.

I highly reccommend one of these for anyone, not just women:
http://www.knoxx.com/action_videos/Knoxx_Videos.php
Scroll through the videos and click on the "Compstock" video.
It reduces recoil by as much as 54%.
A buddy has one, and hes older than I am and "fluffy". He swears by it. Several other officers have it and they love it too.
I've been meaning to get one, but I just don't shoot enough guage. Every time I go shooting, I think about it, then as soon as I put up the gun, I forget to follow through with the order.
One of these days I'll have one...

Thanks for the link but I can not follow it. My only internet is thru the .gov and the monitor my bandwidth, any type of steaming video or buffering puts up a red flag. I have already had a 30 days suspension, second offense is loss of computer/internet. Translation I get the boot and sent back to the States.
I will search Compstock thru Knoxx though. I know that Knoxx makes some decent products.
I think we have settled in on the gun, Mossberg 930 Synthetic Combo 5rd 12ga. It comes with a vent rib 28" barrel and and smooth 18 1/2". I am going to get a Choate +2 to increase the capacity and if a +3 will fit try those. I looked at the 930SPX but there are too many problems out there with stripped recievers at the rear sight base screws and canted front sight posts.
So it is this, figure the self loader will cut down recoil also.

Now to find a dealer to order me 4 of them at a good deal. Where is the guy who says why do you need more than one from the other thread?

I just sent the Manager at Cabella's Gun Library an email requesting pricing on several of the Mossy 930s. Hopefully he gets back to me and I can place an order over the phone for 4 of them.
I called Academy, what a dud. I even called two different locations. Both counter people seamed like older guys but completely worthless and unknowledgable. "yep I got the 930 Mossberg right here $blah, blah". I had to explain to him that there were more than 50 different 930 models. "oh well we only have this one and that is all we have had"
Dicks was atleast helpful somewhat. Just couldn't get me pricing on more than 1 of them. Just so happened to be the combo barrel gun. Great price too. $449 about $50 cheaper than anywhere else and $150 cheaper than Gunbroker.
Now we wait.

More barrels for the zombies when they come. I have a habit of buying enough for my family to enjoy and when I do I purchase all the same thing. 4 seems to be the magic number. 4 ARs built one way, 4 ARs built another way, 4 Shotguns, etc.

That's cool LOL! I don't have that much bank but I wouldn't mind having a back up rifle in the same caliber and shotgun.

I have tried to limit spreading out the calibers that I own and just stacking them deeper in ammo. 9mm, .45acp, .223, .308, 12ga and of course .22lr
I hate to admit it but I may start to sell .45s guns and put that money in more 9mm pistols.

Another reason I think I am set on the 930 combo. It comes with a ported vent railed 28" and also a 18 1/2". A simple barrel swap from a closet home defense gun to a bird gun. I found a place that will thread the barrel for chokes also.
