View Full Version : Girlfriend is buying a Sixxer, will she make it? <--scared boyfriend alert

I've been on and off 2 wheels since I was 4, waited until I was 21 to get a sport bike (zx6r) then moved up to my gsxr750. Reason I mention that is because I have gone down countless times in my life, and been in two accidents since I have started riding on the street (3 years ago). Thankfully I've never had any serious injuries, but I have been the first on the scene on a couple of bad motorcycle accidents and seen how dangrous it can be out on the roads (esp. in DFW).
Now my girlfriend is 22, been driving a dohc cobra since she was 16, and drives it like a bat out of hell. She says she has wanted a bike since she can remember, but I know that when she got her crf50 last May her desire took off. So we are picking up a 2006 GSXR600 with some goodies on Saturday and I am scared shitless. I have already told her that she cant ride it until she's taken the MSF course, lowered the bike, and at least has race rails (if not a full cage, kinda concerned about a lowered bike with a cage bottoming out though so we'll see).
Anyone else been through this? She lives over by White Rock Lake and works off 75 and I live in Arlington, so I am really worried about her using it for commuting. :sigh1:

dont be scared....long as she has on a helmet and some gear minor falls will be ok...and expected

well if she wants one, what can you really do about it? just make sure she takes the course, gets used to it and wears full gear. i dont think a newer 600 is the best choice.
that being said, i would probably feel the same way you do. does she drive her car bad and take lots of blind chances? if so, its probably not a good mix on a bike.

Well, I already know I suck at teaching, esp. when it is something that comes so easily to me. Thats why I insists that she take the MSF, at least those people know how to turn newbz into, well, newbz that can turn and stop. I have known that she wanted one but now that it is definitly happening my heart kinda dropped, now I am going to know what my girlfriends and parents have felt like when I am out on the rode (acting like a jackass). I sound like a total hypocrite but I dont really care!

I agree, but she loves the k6+ gsxrs. I know a 250 or something might be an easier bike to learn on, but I really hate sub 600cc sport bikes personally so I had to keep that in mind!
does she drive her car bad and take lots of blind chances? if so, its probably not a good mix on a bike.
Lets just say I am glad she has the cobra brakes sometimes when I ride with her. I dont drive real aggressive so I might just be a puss, but I close my eyes often when I ride with her! She has promised that she wont ride the bike that way and such, but thats what I told my parents too :(

I never took it either, just went and rode my bike in front of the driver license person and took the written test, next thing I know I was tearing up the roads. I am glad I made it past my crazier days!

get an K8 600 with the SDMS (mode selector). when in C mode you can hit the throttle hard and it doesn't start moving as quick. with it being '09 now I'm sure you can still find some K8's still sitting. Cost is about $8100 on one and I'm sure the dealers would have some kind of rebates on them meaning you can get it for less, or so you'd think. Hell, I've seen brand new '08 zx6r's for $6995.

get her a jacket too, protect her tits
j/k - my only suggestion is take it easy on the streets for awhile, watch her ride a lot first several dozen trips, and don't ride with other ppl
hell start in a parking lot if need be. flesh and metal don't mix

She's her own person, and will do as she pleases. Just make sure that she knows that there are no "fender benders" on a bike. That concree is hard and a car at speed is even harder.

thanks for the advice everyone. she is a little bad ass and will get a bike if i like it or not, but it does make me feel better that she can roll whoolies on her 50, at least she has fallen and understands that concept. our search continues though, i went to look at a 06 gsxr6 and the clutch slipped in every gear but first and he wouldnt negotiate the price to include a clutch so i said next. it is amazing how cheap bikes have gotten, you can get an 06+ gsxr6 for less then 5k now!
what do you guys think about race rails vs. frame sliders? i've douched a bike with frame sliders and dont think they did much to protect the plastics, the race rails look like they'd do a better job and they wouldnt bottom out even with it dropped all the way down. any suggestions?

She is her own person, and will do what she wants. If she likes to tear it up in her Mustang, you need to make sure she knows it's not the same when you're on two wheels, and she has to watch out for everyone else.
Right now would be a great time to buy because that limits her riding time due to weather (off and on warm/wet days.) I would try to just take small trips to go eat, etc. to just ease her into riding on the street w/o overwhelming her. She'll want to jump straight into group rides, etc., but try to urge her to ease into it and y'all will do all that soon enough.
I have a set of dogbones for a 3" drop installed on my K3 from the previous owner that I'm taking off. If they fit whatever y'all buy, just hit me up.

I had a 06 600rr that was the best bike Ive ever owned or ridden for that matter, loved it and regret selling it.
I still have a GPR stabilizer that came off of mine I would sell cheap. I will never own another bike with out one, they make that much of a difference.

As long as she's not trying to rock wheelies her first day, blah, she'll be fine! i started out on a 600...layed it down twice in a parking lot the first day i got it [i guess it's a girl thing], but I drive it through dallas quite frequently now. Those are the most uncomfortable slow bikes I have ever had the chance to ride. Seats are wrapped in concrete it seems like and your balls are constantly pushed into the tank. 600rr's FTL!!

But I can ride for hours on my RR, and have no 'ass' problems...
maybe just a back ache, ha.

Yes suzuki had there shit together when they designed the seat on those things, cause the honda sucked when compared. But damn would the honda ride and corner and brake so much better then that suzuki. Maybe it was all in my head though and I loved the bike so much cause I found such a killer deal on it.

All i'm saying is, never riding a dirtbike, yeah i had a few spills in the grass and in a parking lot. But I ride my bike everywhere now, no problem..i'm just not 'crazy' with it. Riding a bike is common sense, you just always have to be on your toes. I don't think there is anything wrong with a girl beginning on an RR. All she needs to do is take the course, and have a lot of parking lot time. Is that stupid of me to say?
I'm taking it easy...and i know not to push myself into doing something I can't do.
When I first started riding, and guys were haulin ass going 140 mph passed me...
