New HP Laptop - Limited Connectivity

I just got a new HP laptop with VISTA and I am having limited connectivity issues with a router that I know is working. We have a Gateway with Vista and I am able to connect to it with no problems. I seem to remember a similar problem with the Gateway when my folks first got it, but don't remember the resolution.

The wired connection on the HP is working fine when wired to the router.

I've seen a few things in search results that I'd like to try, but I'd rather not spend another 3 hours in front of the thing with no luck.

Most common thing I've read about Vista and it running slow is to roll back the driver on your ethernet card, seems like a ton of people had problems with that, and close out of mcafee if your computer has it.

Believe me, I've been fighting the same thing you have.

Oh I've also read that turning your power settings to performance could help as well... don't ask me why, just read people having success with it on other forums.
