looking at buying my first quad, (not first time riding, just first solo ownership) to ride mainly at red river and muenster. Any suggestions on a quad I should consider when looking to buy this week or next? thx

Check out the Yamaha Wolverine. It's a cross between a sport bike and utility bike. Has a 450 with push-button 4x4.

It's not the fanciest ATV in the world but it's a good bargain and a lot of fun!

You need to first figure out if you want a UTE or Sport style ATV....a lot of varibles to consider....4x4, mud, just trails, will you use it for anything else, etc, etc.

I wouldn't advise just jumping on something without some research first. I bought both of mine back in 07' - both are Polaris, bought brand new, and I researched for about 3 months before actually laying out any green. I wanted UTE ATV's, and Polaris has the market pretty well cornered on that style...however, if you are looking for a sport style there are better options above and beyond Polaris. My next one will be a side-by-side sport, and I'm pretty set on the new RZR-S.

Just do your homework....there are actually some good magazines on the stands that have good buyers guides/comparisons....I subscribe to this one - http://www.atvmag.com/ good info there.

Quads suck. Get a dirt bike. :D

And ditto on Rreemo's post.

Yup, Just depends on what kind of riding you'll be doing. We bought a raptor 700, wolverine 450, and a grizzly 700. The Grizzly does the best for the kind of riding I do.

You should buy our 6 month old 2008 Kawasaki prairie 360 4x4 so I can pay my wife's medical bills

I have three quads. Two Raptors and a Grizzly. My grizzly is becoming my favorite. I bought the Raptors first. They can go pretty much anywhere the Grizzly can at Muenster except for the deep stuff. That is where the Grizzly comes in. It has plenty of power for all out and love the indpendent 4 wheel drive stuff. Here is a pic of the latest one on 14" wheels and 26" tires

Those are some steep angles on those u joints for the back halfshafts. Badass quad though.

I have a 2" lift kit that I never used on my 700 if you need it. That is assuming it will work on the 550.

I know and it is completely stock minus the wheels tires of course. I have not modified any of the suspension whatsoever.

Thanks,

Greg

It should since the 550 and 700 are identical in every way except for the motor of course. I even have the power steering. Not sure I want to lift it any though. How much are you asking for the lift kit?

Well it is used (I bought it used but never installed it). I'd sell it for 80 bucks. Comes with the instructions.

I have a trail made sport quad. I went with Honda because of their reliability and resale value. Every time you hit the starter button on my quad - 10 years from now, it will fire the first time with regular maintenance. I came from a 1987 TRX250 that was bought new in 1987 and to this day it STILL fires on the first bump from the starter. The 700xx has front and rear independent suspension with a NICE ride. Tons of power to play with the 450 guys and climb up some pretty tough trails. I love my 700xx from Honda, its new for them this year. If Red River was ALL I ever rode though, I might reconsider. My neighbor is the finance manager at Cowtown Powersports. He has 2 - 2007 Can AM Renegade 800s. These things are BAD TO THE BONE! He's willing to make a deal on them, PM me if you're interested and i'll get you info. they sell new for 11,000+ and I'm pretty sure you could pick these 07's up for 6-7k range. They're an 800cc Vtwin motor with a bullet proof 4x4 drive train, in a sport quad frame. Check out this video...

my choice was a LTZ400, lite, agile, plenty of power for me. not the fastest by far, but not slow by any means. 06-08 are pretty much the same with reservoir shocks, 09's are EFI. alot of people have Raptor 660. they seem good and i like Yami's but i am happy with the Zuk.

http://www.dfwstangs.net/forums/showthread.php?t=372485

and if you want fast, they can do that also.

I like the LTZ's. I bought my Fiance the 250 version, it's a great bike and she likes it over the 4x4.

Mine has dual exhaust, intake, and tune. You can take it for a spin at red river. How much weight does the IRS add?

I ordered my power commander and intake today. It should be here by tuesday installed/tuned hopefully by friday and by then i'll know if i want to be on the 13t or 14t sprocket. I dont have tires to really hook up where we'll be racing, but it should be more fun none the less.

I rode a 660 (i think) and wasn't tooooo impressed. Yeah it was fast, but it seemed VERY squirly. I want to see how those or a 700 compare to my Honda.

The IRS might weigh a little bit more than SRA quads, but i'll take the added handling and comfort, any day of the week.

I'll run ya someday on my 700R. Only mods are Monster Duals, Trinity Intake w/K&N, and a PCIII. There will be a weight disadvantage though. The Raptor 700R's weigh around 400pds, your Honda is at 500.

Ever run at Lil Sahara, Hwy 79 or Lake Murray? Were headed to Glamis in a month.

Few pics.

Nice pics! Yeah, are you going to come out to RRMT on the 10th with us?

My biggest thing is probably learning to actually ride it. I've only had it since Black Friday so I haven't been anywhere. I'm in missouri right now in the middle of the country and you'd think i'd be able to ride it anywhere... its sat in the garage for the last 6 days so far :(

btw, this isn't lil sahara is it...
