I dont have the chain tool. And I dont feel like letting the shop do it. Anybody ever replaced their own chain? How did you remove the old and replace the new?

funny. Sneaky, Im replacing it because it's stretched pretty good. I have done it before but had a buddies chain tool. He lives in Bama now so I need to get it done with regular tools. I just dont want to hassle with the shop and them needing to hold it for a couple days to just to replace it.

why the hell would you do it that way? talk about pain in the ass
bust out the dremel and a cutting disc and cut it off, to put the new one on you may have to take it to a shop.

You have got to be kidding. You want to cut the chain off and then take the bike to the shop which the guy specfically stated that he didn't want to do?
Pulling the main swing arm bolt and taking loose a few others takes very little time. All this can be done in 30min at the most and you don't need a chain breaker or master link.

First off the op never stated what bike he is doing this on, so I assumed a streetbike. Any street chain worth a shit will be a rivot type chain master link. So he may have to have a shop put it on. A clip style master is not recommended for a street bike. As for the swingarm, dirt bikes are easy enough, but street bikes tend to be a pain. And if this is a newer sportbike it is very time consuming.
Besides that how do you plan on getting the new chain rivoted together?

It is a street bike. I may just go to ahead and bite the bullet and let the shop do it. Maybe I'll get lucky if I trailer it up there and take in in early enough, they may have it ready by the afternoon. Like I said before, my buddy had the chain tools and it was a snap to do. Unfortunately he moved out of state.

Cut off the chain, use a clip type master link and a small C clamp OR it is possible to use the press style master link without a chain tool by putting something solid behind the link and using a hammer and punch.
BEST: go to cycle gear by the motion pro chain tool $100, have it forever and its a snap for doing chains.

cut the old chain off with a dremel then use a clip link to put your new chain on. just make sure the clip has the open end facing the rear of the bike and it will never come off.
